But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. | 1But know this: Hard times will come in the last days. |
People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, | 2For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, demeaning, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, |
without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, | 3unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good, |
treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- | 4traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, |
having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. | 5holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people. |
They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, | 6For among them are those who worm their way into households and deceive gullible women overwhelmed by sins and led astray by a variety of passions, |
always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. | 7always learning and never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. |
Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. | 8Just as Jannes and Jambres resisted Moses, so these also resist the truth. They are men who are corrupt in mind and worthless in regard to the faith. |
But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone. | 9But they will not make further progress, for their foolishness will be clear to all, as was the foolishness of Jannes and Jambres. |
You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, | 10But you have followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, and endurance, |
persecutions, sufferings--what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. | 11along with the persecutions and sufferings that came to me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured--and yet the Lord rescued me from them all. |
In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, | 12In fact, all who want to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. |
while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. | 13Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving and being deceived. |
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, | 14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you, |
and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. | 15and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. |
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, | 16All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, |
so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. | 17so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. |
