New International Version | NET Bible |
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. | 1But understand this, that in the last days difficult times will come. |
People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, | 2For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, |
without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, | 3unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, savage, opposed to what is good, |
treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- | 4treacherous, reckless, conceited, loving pleasure rather than loving God. |
having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. | 5They will maintain the outward appearance of religion but will have repudiated its power. So avoid people like these. |
They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, | 6For some of these insinuate themselves into households and captivate weak women who are overwhelmed with sins and led along by various passions. |
always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. | 7Such women are always seeking instruction, yet never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. |
Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. | 8And just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these people--who have warped minds and are disqualified in the faith--also oppose the truth. |
But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone. | 9But they will not go much further, for their foolishness will be obvious to everyone, just like it was with Jannes and Jambres. |
You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, | 10You, however, have followed my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, my faith, my patience, my love, my endurance, |
persecutions, sufferings--what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. | 11as well as the persecutions and sufferings that happened to me in Antioch, in Iconium, and in Lystra. I endured these persecutions and the Lord delivered me from them all. |
In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, | 12Now in fact all who want to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. |
while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. | 13But evil people and charlatans will go from bad to worse, deceiving others and being deceived themselves. |
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, | 14You, however, must continue in the things you have learned and are confident about. You know who taught you |
and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. | 15and how from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. |
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, | 16Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, |
so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. | 17that the person dedicated to God may be capable and equipped for every good work. |
