And entrust what you heard me say in the presence of many others as witnesses to faithful people who will be competent to teach others as well. | 2And the things that you have heard me say among many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be qualified to teach others as well. |
Take your share of suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. | 3Join me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. |
No one in military service gets entangled in matters of everyday life; otherwise he will not please the one who recruited him. | 4A soldier refrains from entangling himself in civilian affairs, in order to please the one who enlisted him. |
Also, if anyone competes as an athlete, he will not be crowned as the winner unless he competes according to the rules. | 5Likewise, a competitor does not receive the crown unless he competes according to the rules. |
The farmer who works hard ought to have the first share of the crops. | 6The hardworking farmer should be the first to partake of the crops. |
Think about what I am saying and the Lord will give you understanding of all this. | 7Consider what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all things. |

for which I suffer hardship to the point of imprisonment as a criminal, but God's message is not imprisoned! | 9for which I suffer to the extent of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God cannot be chained! |
So I endure all things for the sake of those chosen by God, that they too may obtain salvation in Christ Jesus and its eternal glory. | 10For this reason I endure all things for the sake of the elect, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. |
This saying is trustworthy: If we died with him, we will also live with him. | 11This is a trustworthy saying: If we died with Him, we will also live with Him; |
If we endure, we will also reign with him. If we deny him, he will also deny us. | 12if we endure, we will also reign with Him; if we deny Him, He will also deny us; |
If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, since he cannot deny himself. | 13if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself. |
Remind people of these things and solemnly charge them before the Lord not to wrangle over words. This is of no benefit; it just brings ruin on those who listen. | 14Remind the believers of these things, charging them before God to avoid quarreling over words, which succeeds only in leading the listeners to ruin. |

However, God's solid foundation remains standing, bearing this seal: "The Lord knows those who are his," and "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from evil." | 19Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord must turn away from iniquity.” |
Now in a wealthy home there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also ones made of wood and of clay, and some are for honorable use, but others for ignoble use. | 20A large house contains not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay. Some indeed are for honorable use, but others are for common use. |
So if someone cleanses himself of such behavior, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart, useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. | 21So if anyone cleanses himself of what is unfit, he will be a vessel for honor: sanctified, useful to the Master, and prepared for every good work. |

But reject foolish and ignorant controversies, because you know they breed infighting. | 23But reject foolish and ignorant speculation, for you know that it breeds quarreling. |
And the Lord's slave must not engage in heated disputes but be kind toward all, an apt teacher, patient, | 24And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome, but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, and forbearing. |
correcting opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth | 25He must gently reprove those who oppose him, in the hope that God may grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth. |
