For the choir director. A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; According to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. | 1For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. |
Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity And cleanse me from my sin. | 2Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. |
For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. | 3For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. |
Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge. | 4Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight; so you are right in your verdict and justified when you judge. |
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me. | 5Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. |
Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom. | 6Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb; you taught me wisdom in that secret place. |
Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. | 7Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. |
Make me to hear joy and gladness, Let the bones which You have broken rejoice. | 8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. |
Hide Your face from my sins And blot out all my iniquities. | 9Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. |
Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. | 10Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. |
Do not cast me away from Your presence And do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. | 11Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. |
Restore to me the joy of Your salvation And sustain me with a willing spirit. | 12Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. |
Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners will be converted to You. | 13Then I will teach transgressors your ways, so that sinners will turn back to you. |
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, the God of my salvation; Then my tongue will joyfully sing of Your righteousness. | 14Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, you who are God my Savior, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness. |
O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise. | 15Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise. |
For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. | 16You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. |
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. | 17My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise. |
By Your favor do good to Zion; Build the walls of Jerusalem. | 18May it please you to prosper Zion, to build up the walls of Jerusalem. |
Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, In burnt offering and whole burnt offering; Then young bulls will be offered on Your altar. | 19Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous, in burnt offerings offered whole; then bulls will be offered on your altar. |
