New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
A Song of Ascents, of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman keeps awake in vain. | 1A song of ascents. Of Solomon. Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. |
It is vain for you to rise up early, To retire late, To eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep. | 2In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat-- for he grants sleep to those he loves. |
Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. | 3Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. |
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one's youth. | 4Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth. |
How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed When they speak with their enemies in the gate. | 5Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court. |
