Then Zophar the Naamathite answered, | 1Then Zophar the Naamathite replied: |
"Shall a multitude of words go unanswered, And a talkative man be acquitted? | 2“Should this stream of words go unanswered and such a speaker be vindicated? |
"Shall your boasts silence men? And shall you scoff and none rebuke? | 3Should your babbling put others to silence? Will you scoff without rebuke? |
"For you have said, 'My teaching is pure, And I am innocent in your eyes.' | 4You have said, ‘My doctrine is sound, and I am pure in Your sight.’ |
"But would that God might speak, And open His lips against you, | 5But if only God would speak and open His lips against you, |
And show you the secrets of wisdom! For sound wisdom has two sides. Know then that God forgets a part of your iniquity. | 6and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God exacts from you less than your iniquity deserves. |
"Can you discover the depths of God? Can you discover the limits of the Almighty? | 7Can you fathom the deep things of God or discover the limits of the Almighty? |
"They are high as the heavens, what can you do? Deeper than Sheol, what can you know? | 8They are higher than the heavens—what can you do? They are deeper than Sheol—what can you know? |
"Its measure is longer than the earth And broader than the sea. | 9Their measure is longer than the earth and wider than the sea. |
"If He passes by or shuts up, Or calls an assembly, who can restrain Him? | 10If He comes along to imprison you, or convenes a court, who can stop Him? |
"For He knows false men, And He sees iniquity without investigating. | 11Surely He knows the deceit of men. If He sees iniquity, does He not take note? |
"An idiot will become intelligent When the foal of a wild donkey is born a man. | 12But a witless man can no more become wise than the colt of a wild donkey can be born a man! |
"If you would direct your heart right And spread out your hand to Him, | 13As for you, if you direct your heart and lift up your hands to Him, |
If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away, And do not let wickedness dwell in your tents; | 14if you put away the iniquity in your hand, and allow no injustice to dwell in your tents, |
"Then, indeed, you could lift up your face without moral defect, And you would be steadfast and not fear. | 15then indeed you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and unafraid. |
"For you would forget your trouble, As waters that have passed by, you would remember it. | 16For you will forget your misery, recalling it only as waters gone by. |
"Your life would be brighter than noonday; Darkness would be like the morning. | 17Your life will be brighter than noonday; its darkness will be like the morning. |
"Then you would trust, because there is hope; And you would look around and rest securely. | 18You will be secure, because there is hope, and you will look around and lie down in safety. |
"You would lie down and none would disturb you, And many would entreat your favor. | 19You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor. |
"But the eyes of the wicked will fail, And there will be no escape for them; And their hope is to breathe their last." | 20But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them; they will hope for their last breath.” |
