To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. | 1For the choir director. A Davidic psalm, when Nathan the prophet came to him after he had gone to Bathsheba. Be gracious to me, God, according to Your faithful love; according to Your abundant compassion, blot out my rebellion. |
Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. | 2Wash away my guilt and cleanse me from my sin. |
For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. | 3For I am conscious of my rebellion, and my sin is always before me. |
Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. | 4Against You--You alone--I have sinned and done this evil in Your sight. So You are right when You pass sentence; You are blameless when You judge. |
Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. | 5Indeed, I was guilty when I was born; I was sinful when my mother conceived me. |
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom. | 6Surely You desire integrity in the inner self, and You teach me wisdom deep within. |
Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. | 7Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. |
Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. | 8Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones You have crushed rejoice. |
Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. | 9Turn Your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt. |
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. | 10God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. |
Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. | 11Do not banish me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me. |
Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. | 12Restore the joy of Your salvation to me, and give me a willing spirit. |
Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. | 13Then I will teach the rebellious Your ways, and sinners will return to You. |
Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. | 14Save me from the guilt of bloodshed, God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing of Your righteousness. |
O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. | 15Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare Your praise. |
For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. | 16You do not want a sacrifice, or I would give it; You are not pleased with a burnt offering. |
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. | 17The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. God, You will not despise a broken and humbled heart. |
Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. | 18In Your good pleasure, cause Zion to prosper; build the walls of Jerusalem. |
Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar. | 19Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar. |
