For the choirmaster. For Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, “I will watch my ways so that I will not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle as long as the wicked are present.”1For the choir director, for Jeduthun. A Psalm of David. I said, "I will guard my ways That I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth as with a muzzle While the wicked are in my presence."
I was speechless and still; I remained silent, even from speaking good, and my sorrow was stirred.2I was mute and silent, I refrained even from good, And my sorrow grew worse.
My heart grew hot within me; as I mused, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue:3My heart was hot within me, While I was musing the fire burned; Then I spoke with my tongue:
“Show me, O LORD, my end and the measure of my days. Let me know how fleeting my life is.4"LORD, make me to know my end And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how transient I am.
You, indeed, have made my days as handbreadths, and my lifetime as nothing before You. Truly each man at his best exists as but a breath. Selah5"Behold, You have made my days as handbreadths, And my lifetime as nothing in Your sight; Surely every man at his best is a mere breath. Selah.
Surely every man goes about like a phantom; surely he bustles in vain; he heaps up riches not knowing who will haul them away.6"Surely every man walks about as a phantom; Surely they make an uproar for nothing; He amasses riches and does not know who will gather them.
And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.7"And now, Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in You.
Deliver me from all my transgressions; do not make me the reproach of fools.8"Deliver me from all my transgressions; Make me not the reproach of the foolish.
I have become mute; I do not open my mouth because of what You have done.9"I have become mute, I do not open my mouth, Because it is You who have done it.
Remove Your scourge from me; I am perishing by the force of Your hand.10"Remove Your plague from me; Because of the opposition of Your hand I am perishing.
You discipline and correct a man for his iniquity, consuming like a moth what he holds dear; surely each man is but a vapor. Selah11"With reproofs You chasten a man for iniquity; You consume as a moth what is precious to him; Surely every man is a mere breath. Selah.
Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. For I am a foreigner dwelling with You, a stranger like all my fathers.12"Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; Do not be silent at my tears; For I am a stranger with You, A sojourner like all my fathers.
Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may again be cheered before I depart and am no more.”13"Turn Your gaze away from me, that I may smile again Before I depart and am no more."
