The book familiarly known as the Lamentations consists of four elegies (i., ii., iii., iv.) and a prayer (v.). The general theme of the elegies is the sorrow and desolation created by the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.: the last poem (v.) is a prayer for deliverance from the long continued distress. My family is gone, and my close friends have forgotten me.
I am worn out from sobbing. All night I flood my bed with weeping, drenching it with my tears.
I am scorned by all my enemies and despised by my neighbors--even my friends are afraid to come near me. When they see me on the street, they run the other way.
When I was in deep trouble, I searched for the Lord. All night long I prayed, with hands lifted toward heaven, but my soul was not comforted.
Those who plant in tears will harvest with shouts of joy.
When will you stop running? When will you stop panting after other gods? But you say, 'Save your breath. I'm in love with these foreign gods, and I can't stop loving them now!'
