God also told him that his descendants would live in a foreign land, where they would be oppressed as slaves for 400 years.
'But I will punish the nation that enslaves them,' God said, 'and in the end they will come out and worship me here in this place.'
I have certainly seen the oppression of my people in Egypt. I have heard their groans and have come down to rescue them. Now go, for I am sending you back to Egypt.'
Then the LORD said to Abram, "You can be sure that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign land, where they will be oppressed as slaves for 400 years.
But I will punish the nation that enslaves them, and in the end they will come away with great wealth.
The Aaron and Moses named in this list are the same ones to whom the LORD said, "Lead the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt like an army."
The people of Israel had lived in Egypt for 430 years.
