Faith Under Fire in Jos St. Finbar’s Church Bombing (Jos, 2012) On March 11, 2012, a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden car into St. Finbar’s Church in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, as believers gathered for Sunday worship. The blast killed ten people and wounded many more, turning a place of prayer into a scene of smoke, shattered glass, and urgent cries for help. Survivors reported confusion and panic as families searched for loved ones and the injured were rushed toward nearby medical care. Jos and the Long Shadow of Sectarian Violence Jos has for decades been marked by recurring clashes tied to religion, ethnicity, and contested land and political power. Churches and mosques have both suffered attacks, and ordinary neighborhoods have carried the grief of reprisals. The bombing at St. Finbar’s fit a grim pattern: targeting worshipers to inflame fear, provoke retaliation, and fracture community life. Yet the local Church repeatedly faced the question of whether suffering would harden hearts—or purify faith. Witness in the Aftermath: Courageous Love In the minutes after the explosion, Christians helped one another from rubble, pressed cloth to wounds, and carried the bleeding to safety. Pastors and lay leaders prayed over the dying and steadied the shaken, choosing mercy in the presence of terror. Many believers testified that worship did not end at the blast; it continued in acts of compassion, in refusing revenge, and in entrusting judgment to God. Their response echoed Scripture: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21). Meaning for the Wider Church The attack became a sober reminder that discipleship can be costly, and that faith is not merely private conviction but public allegiance. The suffering Church in Nigeria calls others to intercede, to support pastors and congregations under threat, and to pursue peace without surrendering truth. Christ’s command remains a lived vocation in places like Jos: “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). |
