The Levites, however, were not registered with the tribe of their fathers.

For the LORD had said to Moses:
But the Levites were not counted among the other Israelites, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai, saying,
"Register the Levites by their families and clans. You are to count every male a month old or more."
At the LORD's command they were registered through Moses and each one was assigned his work and burden, as the LORD had commanded Moses.
Now these were the Levites registered by their clans: The Gershonite clan from Gershon, the Kohathite clan from Kohath, and the Merarite clan from Merari.
The registration of the Levites totaled 23,000, every male one month old or more; they were not registered among the other Israelites, because no inheritance was given to them among the Israelites.
