Topical Encyclopedia
Shapen, also known as Shaphan, is a significant figure in the Old Testament, particularly in the context of the religious reforms during the reign of King Josiah of Judah. He is primarily mentioned in the books of 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles, where he plays a crucial role in the rediscovery of the Book of the Law.
Role and Historical ContextShapen served as a scribe or secretary to King Josiah, a position of considerable influence and responsibility. His role as a scribe involved managing royal correspondence, recording events, and overseeing administrative tasks. During Josiah's reign, which is noted for its religious reforms and efforts to restore the worship of Yahweh, Shapen's contributions were pivotal.
Rediscovery of the Book of the LawThe most notable event involving Shapen is the rediscovery of the Book of the Law in the Temple of the Lord. This event is recorded in
2 Kings 22 and
2 Chronicles 34. During the eighteenth year of King Josiah's reign, the king ordered the repair and restoration of the Temple. Hilkiah the high priest found the Book of the Law during this process and gave it to Shapen.
2 Kings 22:8-10 (BSB) states: "Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, 'I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD.' And he gave it to Shaphan, who read it. And Shaphan the scribe went to the king and reported, 'Your servants have paid out the money that was found in the house and have put it into the hands of the supervisors and workers.' Moreover, Shaphan the scribe told the king, 'Hilkiah the priest has given me a book.' And Shaphan read it in the presence of the king."
Upon hearing the words of the Book of the Law, King Josiah was deeply moved and initiated a series of reforms to align the kingdom's practices with the covenantal laws of Yahweh. Shapen's role in this process was crucial, as he was the intermediary who communicated the discovery to the king and read the contents of the book to him.
Family and LegacyShapen's family also played significant roles in the history of Judah. His son, Ahikam, was a supporter of the prophet Jeremiah, providing protection for the prophet during times of persecution (
Jeremiah 26:24). Another son, Gemariah, is mentioned in
Jeremiah 36:10-12 as having a chamber in the Temple where Baruch read Jeremiah's scroll.
Shapen's legacy is one of faithfulness and dedication to the service of God and the king. His actions contributed to one of the most significant religious revivals in the history of Judah, emphasizing the importance of adherence to the covenant and the centrality of the Law in the life of the nation.
