Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

All the multitudes as one man, were forty-two thousand three hundred and sixty:

42,360, yet the particulars reckoned up only make

29,818 in Ezra, and

31,089 in Nehemiah; and we find that Nehemiah mentions

1765 persons who are not in Ezra, and Ezra has

494 not mentioned in Nehemiah. This last circumstance, which seems to render all hope of reconciling them impossible, Mr. Alting thinks is the very point by which they can be reconciled; for, if we add Ezra's surplus to the sum in Nehemiah, and Nehemiah's surplus to the number in Ezra, they will both amount to

31,583; which subtracted from

42,360, leaves a deficiency of

10,777, which are not named because they did not belong to the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, or to the priests, but to the other Israelitish tribes.)

Ezra 9:8 And now as a little, and for a moment has our prayer been made before the Lord our God, to leave us a remnant, and give us a pin in his holy place, and that our God would enlighten our eyes, and would give us a little life in our bondage.

Nehemiah 7:66-69 All the multitude as it were one man, forty-two thousand three hundred sixty, . . .

Isaiah 10:20-22 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that shall escape of the house of Jacob, shall lean no more upon him that striketh them: but they shall lean upon the Lord the Holy One of Israel, in truth. . . .

Jeremiah 23:3 And I will gather together the remnant of my flock, out of all the lands into which I have cast them out: and I will make them return to their own fields, and they shall increase and be multiplied.
