Hananiah’s False Prophecy

1  וַיְהִ֣י׀ (And it came to pass) בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה (year), הַהִ֗יא (in that) בְּרֵאשִׁית֙ (at the beginning) מַמְלֶ֙כֶת֙ (of the reign) צִדְקִיָּ֣ה (of Zedekiah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) יְהוּדָ֔ה (of Judah), בִּשְׁנַת (in the year), הָֽרְבִעִ֔ית (fourth) בַּחֹ֖דֶשׁ (in the month), הַחֲמִישִׁ֑י (fifth) אָמַ֣ר (spoke) אֵלַ֡י (to me) חֲנַנְיָה֩ (that Hananiah) בֶן־ (the son) עַזּ֨וּר (of Azzur) הַנָּבִ֜יא (prophet), אֲשֶׁ֤ר (who was) מִגִּבְעוֹן֙ (from Gibeon) בְּבֵ֣ית (in the house) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), לְעֵינֵ֧י (before the face) הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים (of the priests) וְכָל־ (and all) הָעָ֖ם (the people), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 2  כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֞ר (says) יְהוָ֧ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֛וֹת (Hosts), אֱלֹהֵ֥י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (of Israel), לֵאמֹ֑ר (saying), שָׁבַ֞רְתִּי (I have broken) אֶת־ (-) עֹ֖ל (the yoke) מֶ֥לֶךְ (of the king) בָּבֶֽל׃ (of Babylon). 3  בְּע֣וֹד׀ (Within) שְׁנָתַ֣יִם (two) יָמִ֗ים (years) אֲנִ֤י (I) מֵשִׁיב֙ (will bring back) אֶל־ (to) הַמָּק֣וֹם (the place) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) אֶֽת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) כְּלֵ֖י (the vessels) בֵּ֣ית (of the house), יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) לָקַ֜ח (took away) נְבוּכַדנֶאצַּ֤ר (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶל֙ (of Babylon) מִן־ (from) הַמָּק֣וֹם (the place), הַזֶּ֔ה (this) וַיְבִיאֵ֖ם (and carried) בָּבֶֽל׃ (to Babylon). 4  וְאֶת־ (And) יְכָנְיָ֣ה (Jeconiah) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים (of Jehoiakim) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יְ֠הוּדָה (of Judah), וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) גָּל֨וּת (the captives) יְהוּדָ֜ה (of Judah), הַבָּאִ֣ים (who went) בָּבֶ֗לָה (to Babylon), אֲנִ֥י (I) מֵשִׁ֛יב (will bring back) אֶל־ (to) הַמָּק֥וֹם (place) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH), כִּ֣י (for) אֶשְׁבֹּ֔ר (I will break) אֶת־ (-) עֹ֖ל (the yoke) מֶ֥לֶךְ (of the king) בָּבֶֽל׃ (of Babylon).

5  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (And spoke) יִרְמְיָ֣ה (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֔יא (the prophet) אֶל־ (to) חֲנַנְיָ֖ה (Hananiah) הַנָּבִ֑יא (the prophet) לְעֵינֵ֤י (before the face) הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ (of the priests), וּלְעֵינֵ֣י (and before the face) כָל־ (of all) הָעָ֔ם (the people) הָעֹמְדִ֖ים (who stood) בְּבֵ֥ית (in the house) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH), 6  וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ (and said), יִרְמְיָ֣ה (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֔יא (the prophet) אָמֵ֕ן (Amen)! כֵּ֖ן (So); יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה (do it) יְהוָ֑ה (may YHWH) יָקֵ֤ם (perform) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) דְּבָרֶ֔יךָ (your words) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that) נִבֵּ֗אתָ (you have prophesied), לְהָשִׁ֞יב (to bring back) כְּלֵ֤י (the vessels) בֵית־ (of the house), יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH) וְכָל־ (and all) הַגּוֹלָ֔ה (the captive), מִבָּבֶ֖ל (from Babylon) אֶל־ (to) הַמָּק֥וֹם (the place) הַזֶּֽה׃ (this).

7  אַךְ־ (Nevertheless) שְׁמַֽע־ (hear) נָא֙ (now) הַדָּבָ֣ר (word) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) אָנֹכִ֖י (I) דֹּבֵ֣ר (am speaking) בְּאָזְנֶ֑יךָ (in your ears), וּבְאָזְנֵ֖י (and in the ears) כָּל־ (of all) הָעָֽם׃ (the people); 8  הַנְּבִיאִ֗ים (The prophets) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (who) הָי֧וּ (have been) לְפָנַ֛י (before me) וּלְפָנֶ֖יךָ (and before you) מִן־ (from) הָֽעוֹלָ֑ם (of old) וַיִּנָּ֨בְא֜וּ (even they prophesied) אֶל־ (to) אֲרָצ֤וֹת (lands), רַבּוֹת֙ (many) וְעַל־ (and over) מַמְלָכ֣וֹת (kingdoms), גְּדֹל֔וֹת (great) לְמִלְחָמָ֖ה (regarding war), וּלְרָעָ֥ה (and disaster), וּלְדָֽבֶר׃ (and pestilence). 9  הַנָּבִ֕יא (The prophet) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יִנָּבֵ֖א (prophesies) לְשָׁל֑וֹם (of peace), בְּבֹא֙ (shall come to pass), דְּבַ֣ר (when the word) הַנָּבִ֗יא (of the prophet) יִוָּדַע֙ (will be known), הַנָּבִ֔יא (that the prophet) אֲשֶׁר־ (as one whom) שְׁלָח֥וֹ (has sent) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) בֶּאֱמֶֽת׃ (truly).

10  וַיִּקַּ֞ח (Took) חֲנַנְיָ֤ה (and Hananiah) הַנָּבִיא֙ (the prophet) אֶת־ (-) הַמּוֹטָ֔ה (the yoke) מֵעַ֕ל (from) צַוַּ֖אר (the neck), יִרְמְיָ֣ה (of Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֑יא (the prophet) וַֽיִּשְׁבְּרֵֽהוּ׃ (and broke it). 11  וַיֹּ֣אמֶר (Spoke) חֲנַנְיָה֩ (and Hananiah) לְעֵינֵ֨י (before the face) כָל־ (of all) הָעָ֜ם (the people), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), כֹּה֮ (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָה֒ (YHWH); כָּ֣כָה (Even so) אֶשְׁבֹּ֞ר (will I break) אֶת־ (-) עֹ֣ל׀ (the yoke) נְבֻֽכַדְנֶאצַּ֣ר (of Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶ֗ל (of Babylon) בְּעוֹד֙ (within) שְׁנָתַ֣יִם (two) יָמִ֔ים (full years). מֵעַ֕ל (From) צַוַּ֖אר (the neck) כָּל־ (of all) הַגּוֹיִ֑ם (the nations)

וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ (went) יִרְמְיָ֥ה (and Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet) לְדַרְכּֽוֹ׃פ (on his way). 12  וַיְהִ֥י (And came) דְבַר־ (the word) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) אֶֽל־ (to) יִרְמְיָ֑ה (Jeremiah) אַ֠חֲרֵי (after) שְׁב֞וֹר (had broken) חֲנַנְיָ֤ה (Hananiah) הַנָּבִיא֙ (the prophet) אֶת־ (-) הַמּוֹטָ֔ה (the yoke) מֵעַ֗ל (from) צַוַּ֛אר (the neck) יִרְמְיָ֥ה (of Jeremiah), הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet) לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying), 13  הָלוֹךְ֩ (Go) וְאָמַרְתָּ֨ (and speak) אֶל־ (to) חֲנַנְיָ֜ה (Hananiah), לֵאמֹ֗ר (saying), כֹּ֚ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH); מוֹטֹ֥ת (Yokes) עֵ֖ץ (of wood); שָׁבָ֑רְתָּ (you have broken) וְעָשִׂ֥יתָ (and you have fashioned) תַחְתֵּיהֶ֖ן (in their place) מֹט֥וֹת (yokes) בַּרְזֶֽל׃ (of iron).

14  כִּ֣י (For) כֹֽה־ (thus) אָמַר֩ (says) יְהוָ֨ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֜וֹת (Hosts), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל (of Israel); עֹ֣ל (A yoke) בַּרְזֶ֡ל (of iron) נָתַ֜תִּי (I have put) עַל־ (on) צַוַּ֣אר׀ (the neck) כָּל־ (of all) הַגּוֹיִ֣ם (nations), הָאֵ֗לֶּה (these) לַעֲבֹ֛ד (to serve) אֶת־ (-) נְבֻכַדְנֶאצַּ֥ר (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (king) בָּבֶ֖ל (of Babylon); וַעֲבָדֻ֑הוּ (and they shall serve him) וְגַ֛ם (and also). אֶת־ (-) חַיַּ֥ת (the beast) הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה (of the field) נָתַ֥תִּי (I have given) לֽוֹ׃ (to him).

15  וַיֹּ֨אמֶר (And said) יִרְמְיָ֧ה (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֛יא (the prophet) אֶל־ (to) חֲנַנְיָ֥ה (Hananiah) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet), שְׁמַֽע־ (Hear) נָ֣א (now), חֲנַנְיָ֑ה (Hananiah); לֹֽא־ (not) שְׁלָחֲךָ֣ (has sent you) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) וְאַתָּ֗ה (and you) הִבְטַ֛חְתָּ (have made trust) אֶת־ (-) הָעָ֥ם (people) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) עַל־ (in) שָֽׁקֶר׃ (a lie). 16  לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) כֹּ֚ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH); הִנְנִי֙ (Behold, I) מְשַֽׁלֵּֽחֲךָ֔ (am going to cast you) מֵעַ֖ל (from) פְּנֵ֣י (the face) הָאֲדָמָ֑ה (of the earth). הַשָּׁנָה֙ (This year) אַתָּ֣ה (you) מֵ֔ת (will die), כִּֽי־ (because) סָרָ֥ה (rebellion) דִבַּ֖רְתָּ (you have taught) אֶל־ (against) יְהוָֽה׃ (YHWH).

17  וַיָּ֛מָת (Died) חֲנַנְיָ֥ה (and Hananiah) הַנָּבִ֖יא (the prophet) בַּשָּׁנָ֣ה (year) הַהִ֑יא (in that) בַּחֹ֖דֶשׁ (month) הַשְּׁבִיעִֽי׃פ (in the seventh).
