Awake, O harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn. Sermons
I. MORNING RELIGION IS REFRESHING TO THE SOUL. Because then thought is free and emotion lively, and there is a bright and cheerful tone on all that is said and done. When wearied with the day and its toils and care, religious meditation easily becomes gloomy, the fatigued body flinging its shadows over all the expressions of the spirit. Give the freshness of morning thoughts to God, and that service will surely come back on you as refreshing. II. MORNING RELIGION IS ACCEPTABLE TO GOD. Because it shows him that we are in earnest in his service, and hold our very best as the fitting gift to offer to him. "The flower that's offered in the bud is the best sacrifice." That is as true of the day as of the life. And God may be expected to estimate our gifts in the light of what they cost us to present to him. That is our way of appraising the gifts which we receive, and we may be sure that it is God's way. What, then, is God's estimate of our daily praise and thanksgiving? Does it really cost us much? It does if, for it, we awake early; preventing the day lest we should lose our holy opportunity, or be beneath our best and freshest in our communions. III. MORNING RELIGION IS INFLUENTIAL ON OTHERS. It is one of the most effective and impressive examples; and it has a special influence on the young, helping them to form good life-habits. Many of us can gratefully remember the influence of the early morning devotions of our parents. Let us gain the power on others which they have gained on us. - R.T.
Through God we shall do valiantly. 1. Whatsoever may be the variety of the exercises of faith, victory and triumph shall close the war, and crown the wrestler.2. Albeit the means be nothing but vanity without God, yet they must be used, for they are something when they are used by us, and put in God's hand. 3. What the Lord doth by the believer as His servant, or by any other instrument, God must have the glory of it. 4. The faith of the Church's victory over her enemies is grounded upon God's engaging in the war for the Church, and against our enemies. (D. Dickson.) ( C. H. Spurgeon.). Hold not Thy peace, O God of my praise. I. THE MISDEEDS OF THE WICKED (vers. 1-5).II. THE IMPRECATION OF WRATH (vers. 6-20). III. THE CRY FOR MERCY (vers. 21-25). "The thunder and lightning are now followed by deep, sorrowful complaint like a flood of tears." IV. THE DISPLAY OF THE DIVINE RIGHTEOUSNESS (vers. 26-31). In this concluding strophe the cry for help is renewed, together with a confident assurance of being answered. The suppliant asks relief in such way as to show that it came from God's own hand. God's blessing is set in sharp contrast with men's cursing. The efforts of the ungodly shall end in disappointment and shame, but the Lord's servant will only rejoice. This deliverance will call forth his thanks, which will not be private, but expressed in the presence of a multitude. (T. W. Chambers, D. D.) Jesus was standing with his three Apostles on the road between Gethsemani, and the Garden of Olives, when Judas and the band who accompanied him made their appearance. A warm dispute arose between Judas and the soldiers, because he wished to approach first and speak to Jesus quietly as if nothing was the matter, and then for them to come up and seize our Saviour, thus letting him suppose that he had no connection with the affair.
