Wisdom in Priorities

Topical Encyclopedia
In the biblical context, wisdom in priorities refers to the discernment and understanding necessary to order one's life according to God's will and purposes. This involves recognizing what is of ultimate importance and aligning one's actions and decisions accordingly. The Bible provides numerous teachings and examples that illustrate the importance of prioritizing wisely.

Biblical Foundation

The concept of wisdom in priorities is deeply rooted in the Scriptures. Proverbs 4:7 states, "Wisdom is supreme; therefore acquire wisdom. And whatever you may acquire, gain understanding." This verse underscores the preeminence of wisdom, suggesting that it should be a primary pursuit in the life of a believer.

Jesus' Teachings

Jesus Christ emphasized the importance of prioritizing the kingdom of God above all else. In Matthew 6:33 , He instructs, "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you." Here, Jesus teaches that the pursuit of God's kingdom and righteousness should take precedence over material concerns and daily anxieties.

The Example of Mary and Martha

The account of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 provides a practical illustration of wisdom in priorities. While Martha was "distracted by all the preparations to be made," Mary chose to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to His teaching. Jesus commended Mary, saying, "Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her." This narrative highlights the importance of prioritizing spiritual nourishment and communion with Christ over the busyness of life.

The Apostle Paul

The Apostle Paul also provides insight into prioritizing wisely. In Philippians 3:7-8 , Paul writes, "But whatever was gain to me I count as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord." Paul demonstrates that knowing Christ and pursuing a relationship with Him surpasses all other achievements and possessions.

Old Testament Wisdom

The Old Testament also offers guidance on setting priorities. In Ecclesiastes 12:13 , Solomon concludes, "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man." This verse encapsulates the essence of living a life ordered by divine priorities, emphasizing reverence for God and obedience to His commands.

Practical Application

The Bible encourages believers to apply wisdom in their daily lives by setting priorities that reflect God's values. This includes dedicating time to prayer, studying Scripture, serving others, and participating in the life of the church. In Ephesians 5:15-17 , Paul advises, "Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is."

Conclusion

The biblical call to wisdom in priorities is a call to live intentionally, with a focus on eternal values and divine purposes. By seeking God's wisdom and aligning our lives with His will, believers can navigate the complexities of life with clarity and purpose.
