Introduction

The concept of wisdom is a central theme in the Bible, with a clear distinction made between "wisdom from above" and "earthly wisdom." This distinction is crucial for understanding the biblical perspective on how believers are to live and make decisions. The Bible provides guidance on recognizing and applying true wisdom, which aligns with God's character and purposes.

Wisdom from Above

Wisdom from above is described in the Bible as pure, peaceable, gentle, and full of mercy and good fruits. It is a divine gift that reflects the character of God and is rooted in a reverent fear of the Lord. James 3:17 states, "But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere." This wisdom is characterized by its moral and spiritual qualities, leading to a life that honors God and promotes harmony among people.

The source of wisdom from above is God Himself. Proverbs 2:6 affirms, "For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding." This wisdom is accessible to those who seek it earnestly and with a humble heart. James 1:5 encourages believers, "Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him."

Earthly Wisdom

In contrast, earthly wisdom is characterized by its focus on self-interest, ambition, and material gain. It is often associated with envy, strife, and disorder. James 3:14-16 warns, "But if you harbor bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast in it or deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every evil practice."

Earthly wisdom is limited by human understanding and often leads to decisions that are contrary to God's will. It is based on human reasoning and the values of the world, which are often at odds with the principles of God's kingdom. 1 Corinthians 3:19 states, "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God’s sight. As it is written: 'He catches the wise in their craftiness.'"

The Pursuit of True Wisdom

The Bible encourages believers to pursue wisdom from above by cultivating a relationship with God and aligning their lives with His Word. Proverbs 9:10 declares, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." This reverence for God is foundational to acquiring true wisdom, which leads to righteous living and eternal perspective.

Believers are called to discern between the two types of wisdom and choose the path that leads to life and godliness. Colossians 3:2 advises, "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." By focusing on the eternal and seeking God's guidance, Christians can navigate the complexities of life with wisdom that reflects God's truth and love.
