Wisdom

In the Bible, wisdom is highly esteemed as a divine attribute and a gift from God. It is often associated with the fear of the Lord, moral integrity, and the ability to make sound judgments. The Book of Proverbs is particularly rich in teachings about wisdom, portraying it as a guiding principle for a righteous life. Proverbs 9:10 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." This verse underscores the belief that true wisdom begins with reverence for God.

Wisdom is personified in Proverbs 8, where it is depicted as calling out to humanity, offering guidance and understanding. Proverbs 8:35-36 declares, "For whoever finds me finds life and obtains the favor of the LORD. But he who fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death." Here, wisdom is presented as essential for life and divine favor, contrasting the consequences of ignoring it.

In the New Testament, wisdom is further emphasized as a spiritual gift. James 1:5 encourages believers to seek wisdom from God: "Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." This passage highlights the accessibility of divine wisdom to those who earnestly seek it.

Longevity

Longevity, or long life, is often portrayed in the Bible as a blessing from God, frequently linked to obedience and righteousness. The Fifth Commandment, found in Exodus 20:12 , promises, "Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you." This commandment suggests a direct correlation between honoring one's parents and the blessing of a prolonged life.

The Book of Proverbs also associates longevity with wisdom and righteousness. Proverbs 3:1-2 advises, "My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; for they will add length to your days, years and peace to your life." Here, adherence to divine teachings is linked to both longevity and peace.

In the Psalms, the righteous are often promised long life as a reward for their faithfulness. Psalm 91:16 states, "With long life I will satisfy him and show him My salvation." This verse reflects the belief that God rewards the faithful with both temporal and eternal blessings.

While the Bible presents longevity as a blessing, it also acknowledges the sovereignty of God over life and death. Job 14:5 reminds us, "Since his days are determined and the number of his months is with You, and You have set limits that he cannot exceed." This acknowledgment of divine control over human lifespan serves as a reminder of the ultimate authority of God in all matters of life.
