The phrase "those who know Him" refers to individuals who have a personal and intimate relationship with God, as revealed through the Scriptures. This knowledge is not merely intellectual but involves a deep, experiential understanding of God's character, will, and purposes. In the Bible, knowing God is often associated with faith, obedience, and love.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the concept of knowing God is closely tied to the covenant relationship between God and His people, Israel. The Hebrew word "yada" is often used to describe this intimate knowledge. For example, in Jeremiah 9:24 , the Lord declares, "But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the LORD, who exercises loving devotion, justice, and righteousness on the earth—for I delight in these things, declares the LORD." Here, knowing God involves understanding His attributes and aligning one's life with His values.

The prophets frequently called Israel to return to a true knowledge of God, contrasting it with mere ritualistic observance. Hosea 6:6 states, "For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings." This verse emphasizes that genuine knowledge of God results in a life marked by mercy and righteousness.

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, knowing God is centered on the revelation of God through Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself speaks of this relationship in John 17:3 : "Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent." Eternal life is defined as knowing God and His Son, indicating that this knowledge is both the means and the end of salvation.

The Apostle Paul frequently writes about the transformative power of knowing Christ. In Philippians 3:10 , he expresses his desire "to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to Him in His death." For Paul, knowing Christ involves sharing in His sufferings and being transformed into His likeness.

Characteristics of Those Who Know Him

1. Faith and Trust: Those who know God exhibit a deep trust in His promises and character. Hebrews 11:6 states, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him."

2. Obedience: Knowledge of God leads to obedience to His commands. 1 John 2:3-4 says, "By this we can be sure that we have come to know Him: if we keep His commandments. If anyone says, 'I know Him,' but does not keep His commandments, he is a liar, and the truth is not in him."

3. Love: Love is a defining characteristic of those who know God. 1 John 4:7-8 declares, "Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."

4. Spiritual Discernment: Those who know God possess spiritual discernment, enabling them to understand His will and purposes. Colossians 1:9-10 encourages believers to "be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way."

Implications for Believers

For believers, knowing God is both a privilege and a responsibility. It involves a continual pursuit of deeper relationship through prayer, study of the Scriptures, and fellowship with other believers. This knowledge transforms lives, leading to greater conformity to the image of Christ and a more profound impact on the world.
