The Reward for Righteousness

Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of the reward for righteousness is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing the blessings and benefits that come from living a life in accordance with God's will. Righteousness, in biblical terms, refers to living in a way that is morally right and just, aligning one's actions and heart with the commandments and teachings of God.

Old Testament Foundations

In the Old Testament, the reward for righteousness is often depicted in terms of tangible blessings, such as prosperity, health, and protection. For instance, in the book of Deuteronomy, God promises the Israelites that if they obey His commandments, they will be blessed in the land they are entering to possess (Deuteronomy 28:1-14). The Psalms also reflect this theme, as seen in Psalm 1:1-3 : "Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked... He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does."

The wisdom literature, particularly the book of Proverbs, frequently contrasts the outcomes of the righteous and the wicked. Proverbs 11:18 states, "The wicked man earns an empty wage, but he who sows righteousness reaps a true reward." This highlights the belief that righteousness leads to a fulfilling and meaningful life.

New Testament Teachings

In the New Testament, the focus shifts more towards spiritual and eternal rewards. Jesus, in His Sermon on the Mount, emphasizes the blessings that come to those who pursue righteousness. Matthew 5:6 declares, "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled." Here, the reward is not only a present satisfaction but also an assurance of future fulfillment.

Jesus also speaks of heavenly rewards for righteous living. In Matthew 6:19-20 , He advises, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth... But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." This teaching underscores the eternal nature of the rewards for righteousness, contrasting them with the temporary nature of earthly gains.

The Apostle Paul further elaborates on this theme, encouraging believers to live righteously in anticipation of eternal life. In Galatians 6:8-9 , he writes, "The one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up."

Theological Implications

The reward for righteousness is not merely transactional but relational, rooted in a covenantal relationship with God. It reflects God's faithfulness and His desire to bless those who seek Him earnestly. The rewards are both present and future, encompassing peace, joy, and a sense of purpose in this life, as well as the promise of eternal life with God.

The Bible also makes it clear that righteousness is not achieved through human effort alone but through faith and reliance on God's grace. As seen in Romans 3:22 , "And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe." This underscores the Christian belief that true righteousness is a gift from God, made possible through the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.

Practical Application

Believers are encouraged to pursue righteousness as a response to God's love and grace, trusting in His promises of reward. This pursuit involves a commitment to living according to biblical principles, engaging in acts of kindness, justice, and mercy, and maintaining a heart devoted to God. The assurance of reward serves as motivation and encouragement, inspiring believers to remain steadfast in their faith and conduct.
