The LORD's instructions to Moses are a central theme in the Pentateuch, particularly in the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These instructions encompass a wide range of topics, including the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt, the establishment of the covenant, the construction of the Tabernacle, and the giving of the Law. Moses serves as the mediator between God and the people of Israel, receiving divine guidance and commandments that shape the identity and religious practices of the nation.

The Call of Moses

The initial call of Moses occurs in Exodus 3, where God appears to him in a burning bush on Mount Horeb. The LORD reveals His name as "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14) and commissions Moses to lead the Israelites out of Egyptian bondage. Despite Moses' hesitations and objections, God assures him of His presence and provides signs to confirm his mission.

The Exodus and the Covenant

Following the plagues and the Passover, Moses leads the Israelites out of Egypt. At Mount Sinai, God delivers the Ten Commandments and other laws, establishing a covenant with Israel. The LORD instructs Moses on various aspects of worship, civil law, and moral conduct. Exodus 24:12 states, "The LORD said to Moses, 'Come up to Me on the mountain and stay here, so that I may give you the tablets of stone, with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.'"

The Tabernacle and Priesthood

In Exodus 25-31, God provides detailed instructions for the construction of the Tabernacle, a portable sanctuary for worship. The LORD specifies materials, dimensions, and furnishings, emphasizing the holiness required for His dwelling place among the people. Additionally, God appoints Aaron and his sons as priests, outlining their duties and the sacrificial system in Leviticus.

Wilderness Wanderings

Throughout the Israelites' journey in the wilderness, the LORD continues to instruct Moses. In Numbers, God guides the organization of the tribes, the census, and the distribution of land. He also addresses issues of rebellion, sin, and purification. Numbers 9:23 notes, "At the LORD’s command they set out, and at the LORD’s command they camped. They remained encamped as long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle."

Renewal of the Covenant

As the Israelites prepare to enter the Promised Land, Moses reiterates the Law in Deuteronomy. The LORD instructs Moses to remind the people of their covenant obligations and the blessings and curses associated with obedience and disobedience. Deuteronomy 31:9 records, "So Moses wrote down this law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel."

Moses' Final Instructions

Before his death, Moses receives instructions from the LORD regarding the succession of leadership to Joshua and the future of Israel. God allows Moses to view the Promised Land from Mount Nebo, but he is not permitted to enter it. Deuteronomy 34:5 states, "So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, as the LORD had said."

The LORD's instructions to Moses are foundational to the faith and practice of Israel, establishing a framework for worship, community life, and the relationship between God and His people. Through Moses, the LORD reveals His character, His expectations, and His enduring covenant with Israel.
