The term "lampstands" in the Bible primarily refers to the sacred objects used in the Tabernacle and the Temple, as well as in prophetic visions. These lampstands hold significant theological and symbolic meaning throughout the Scriptures.

The Tabernacle and the Temple

The first mention of a lampstand is found in the instructions given to Moses for the construction of the Tabernacle. In Exodus 25:31-40, God commands Moses to make a lampstand of pure gold. This lampstand, also known as the menorah, was to have six branches extending from a central shaft, making a total of seven lamps. The lampstand was to be placed in the Holy Place, opposite the table of showbread, and was to be kept burning continually as a symbol of God's eternal presence and light. The Berean Standard Bible states: "Then you are to make a lampstand of pure gold. The lampstand and its base and shaft are to be made of hammered gold; its cups, buds, and petals shall be of one piece" (Exodus 25:31).

In Solomon's Temple, the design of the lampstands was expanded. According to 1 Kings 7:49, ten lampstands were made of gold, five on the south side and five on the north side of the Holy Place. These lampstands continued to serve as a symbol of divine illumination and guidance.

Prophetic Visions

The imagery of lampstands is also prominent in prophetic literature. In the book of Zechariah, the prophet sees a vision of a golden lampstand with a bowl on top and seven lamps on it, with two olive trees standing beside it (Zechariah 4:2-3). This vision symbolizes the power of the Holy Spirit and God's provision for His people. The BSB records: "I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven spouts to the lamps" (Zechariah 4:2).

In the New Testament, the book of Revelation uses the imagery of lampstands to represent the seven churches of Asia Minor. In Revelation 1:12-13, the apostle John describes seeing seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of them, one like a son of man. The lampstands symbolize the churches' role as bearers of God's light in the world. The BSB states: "Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned, I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was One like the Son of Man" (Revelation 1:12-13).

Symbolism and Theology

Throughout Scripture, lampstands symbolize God's presence, guidance, and the light of His truth. They serve as a reminder of the divine calling of God's people to be a light to the nations, reflecting His holiness and truth. The continual burning of the lamps signifies the perpetual nature of God's covenant and His unwavering faithfulness to His people.

The lampstands also point to the ultimate fulfillment of God's light in Jesus Christ, who declared Himself to be the "light of the world" (John 8:12). As believers, Christians are called to reflect this light, living as "children of light" (Ephesians 5:8) and holding forth the word of life in a darkened world.
