Pride, often considered the original sin, is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, warning believers of its destructive consequences. The Bible consistently portrays pride as a sin that leads to downfall, separation from God, and spiritual ruin. This entry explores the biblical understanding of pride, its consequences, and the scriptural exhortations to humility.

Definition and Nature of Pride

Pride is an excessive view of oneself, often manifesting as arrogance, self-reliance, and a lack of acknowledgment of God's sovereignty. It is the elevation of self above others and, ultimately, above God. The Bible warns against pride as it leads individuals to trust in their own abilities and wisdom rather than in God.

Biblical Examples of Pride and Its Consequences

1. Lucifer's Fall: The most notable example of pride is found in the account of Lucifer, whose desire to exalt himself above God led to his downfall. Isaiah 14:13-14 describes Lucifer's prideful ambition: "You said in your heart, 'I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit on the mount of assembly, in the far reaches of the north. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'"

2. The Tower of Babel: In Genesis 11:4 , humanity's prideful attempt to build a tower reaching the heavens resulted in God scattering them across the earth: "And they said, 'Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered over the face of the whole earth.'"

3. Nebuchadnezzar's Humiliation: King Nebuchadnezzar's pride led to his temporary downfall and madness, as recorded in Daniel 4:30-32 : "The king exclaimed, 'Is this not Babylon the Great, which I myself have built by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?' While the words were still in the king’s mouth, a voice came from heaven: 'It is decreed for you, King Nebuchadnezzar, that your kingdom has been removed from you.'"

Scriptural Warnings Against Pride

The Bible contains numerous warnings against pride, emphasizing its destructive nature and the importance of humility:

· Proverbs 16:18 : "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." This verse succinctly captures the inevitable downfall that follows pride.

· James 4:6 : "But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: 'God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'" This passage highlights God's opposition to the proud and His favor towards the humble.

· 1 Peter 5:5 : "In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, 'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.'"

The Call to Humility

The antidote to pride is humility, a virtue that the Bible consistently encourages. Humility involves recognizing one's dependence on God and valuing others above oneself. Jesus Christ exemplified perfect humility, as described in Philippians 2:5-8 : "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross."

Believers are called to emulate Christ's humility, acknowledging their need for God's grace and living in submission to His will. Through humility, Christians can avoid the pitfalls of pride and maintain a right relationship with God and others.
