The Consequence

In the biblical narrative, the concept of "consequence" is deeply intertwined with the themes of sin, obedience, and divine justice. The Bible presents consequences as the natural and divine outcomes of human actions, both good and evil. These consequences are often depicted as a reflection of God's righteous character and His moral order for creation.

Old Testament Context

The Old Testament frequently illustrates the principle of consequence through the covenant relationship between God and His people. In Genesis, the first instance of consequence is seen in the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve's disobedience to God's command not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil results in their expulsion from the garden and the introduction of sin and death into the world (Genesis 3:16-19). This foundational event establishes the pattern of sin leading to separation from God and the need for redemption.

The Mosaic Law further elaborates on the concept of consequence. In Deuteronomy 28, blessings and curses are outlined as the results of obedience or disobedience to God's commandments. "If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth" (Deuteronomy 28:1). Conversely, disobedience brings curses, as seen in Deuteronomy 28:15: "But if you do not obey the LORD your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you" .

The historical books of the Old Testament, such as Judges and Kings, provide narrative examples of these principles. The Israelites' repeated cycle of sin, consequence, repentance, and deliverance underscores the reality of divine justice and mercy.

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, the concept of consequence is further developed through the teachings of Jesus and the apostles. Jesus emphasizes the spiritual and eternal consequences of belief and unbelief. In John 3:36, He states, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them" . This highlights the ultimate consequence of accepting or rejecting the gospel message.

The apostle Paul also addresses the theme of consequence in his epistles. In Galatians 6:7-8, he writes, "Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked. Whatever a man sows, he will reap in return. The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; but the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life" . This passage reinforces the principle that actions have spiritual repercussions, both in this life and the life to come.

Theological Implications

Theologically, the concept of consequence is integral to understanding the nature of sin and redemption. Sin, as a violation of God's law, inherently brings about negative consequences, both temporally and eternally. However, the Bible also presents the redemptive work of Christ as the means by which the ultimate consequence of sin—eternal separation from God—is overcome. Through faith in Jesus Christ, believers are spared the eternal consequence of sin and are granted eternal life (Romans 6:23).

The doctrine of consequence also underscores the importance of moral responsibility and the call to live a life of holiness. Believers are encouraged to pursue righteousness, knowing that their actions have both immediate and eternal significance. As James 1:22-25 exhorts, "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the one who looks intently into the perfect law of freedom, and continues to do so—not being a forgetful hearer, but an effective doer—he will be blessed in what he does" .

In summary, the biblical concept of consequence serves as a reminder of the moral order established by God, the seriousness of sin, and the hope of redemption through Jesus Christ. It calls believers to live in accordance with God's will, recognizing the profound impact of their choices.
