The blessing of fruitfulness is first introduced in the creation narrative. In Genesis 1:28 , God commands Adam and Eve, "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it." This mandate establishes fruitfulness as a divine intention for humanity, encompassing procreation, stewardship, and dominion over creation.

The theme continues with the patriarchs. God's covenant with Abraham includes the promise of numerous descendants, as seen in Genesis 17:6 : "I will make you exceedingly fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will descend from you."
