Submission to God

The ultimate form of submission is to God Himself. James 4:7 exhorts believers, "Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you." This verse highlights the strength found in submission, as it empowers believers to stand firm against evil. Submission to God involves trusting His wisdom and sovereignty, acknowledging that His ways are higher than our own (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Submission in the Family

The Bible outlines specific roles within the family unit, emphasizing submission as a means to foster love and respect. Ephesians 5:22-24 instructs, "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything." This passage is often misunderstood; however, it underscores a mutual submission rooted in love and respect, as husbands are called to love their wives sacrificially (Ephesians 5:25).

Submission to Authority

Romans 13:1-2 teaches, "Let every person be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves." Submission in the Church

Hebrews 13:17 advises, "Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who must give an account. To this end, allow them to lead with joy and not with grief, for that would be of no advantage to you." Submission of Christ

The ultimate example of submission is found in Jesus Christ, who submitted to the Father's will even unto death. Philippians 2:5-8 states, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross." Christ's submission is the epitome of strength, demonstrating obedience and humility that led to the salvation of humanity.

Submission as a Path to Freedom

Paradoxically, submission in the biblical sense leads to true freedom. By submitting to God's will, believers are liberated from the bondage of sin and self. Galatians 5:1 declares, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free; stand firm, then, and do not be encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery." Submission to God and His ways brings about a freedom that transcends earthly constraints, allowing believers to live in the fullness of His grace and truth.
