Definition: Scriptural integrity refers to the trustworthiness, reliability, and consistency of the Bible as the inspired Word of God. It encompasses the belief that the Scriptures are free from error in their original manuscripts and are authoritative for faith and practice.

Biblical Foundation: The concept of scriptural integrity is rooted in the belief that the Bible is divinely inspired. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 states, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work." This passage underscores the divine origin and purpose of Scripture, affirming its role in guiding believers.

Inerrancy and Infallibility: Scriptural integrity is closely associated with the doctrines of inerrancy and infallibility. Inerrancy asserts that the Bible, in its original manuscripts, is without error in all it affirms, whether in matters of faith, history, or science. Infallibility emphasizes that the Scriptures are incapable of leading believers astray in matters of faith and practice. Psalm 19:7 declares, "The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making wise the simple."

Preservation and Transmission: The integrity of Scripture also involves its preservation and accurate transmission through the ages. Despite being copied and translated over centuries, the Bible has been remarkably preserved. The discovery of ancient manuscripts, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, has confirmed the consistency of the biblical text over time. Isaiah 40:8 affirms, "The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever."

Authority and Sufficiency: The authority of Scripture is a key aspect of its integrity. As the Word of God, the Bible holds ultimate authority over all aspects of life and doctrine. Jesus Himself affirmed the authority of Scripture in Matthew 5:18 , saying, "For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not a single jot, not a stroke of a pen, will disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished." The sufficiency of Scripture means that it contains all that is necessary for salvation and godly living, as highlighted in 2 Peter 1:3 : "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence."

Challenges and Defenses: Throughout history, the integrity of Scripture has faced challenges from various quarters, including higher criticism, secular philosophies, and alternative religious texts. Defenders of scriptural integrity have responded by emphasizing the historical reliability of the Bible, the fulfillment of prophecy, and the transformative power of its message. Apologetic works and scholarly research continue to support the credibility and trustworthiness of the biblical text.

Practical Implications: For believers, scriptural integrity has profound implications for daily life and spiritual growth. It calls for a commitment to studying, understanding, and applying the Bible's teachings. James 1:22 exhorts, "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves." The integrity of Scripture assures Christians that their faith is grounded in a reliable and unchanging foundation, providing confidence in God's promises and guidance.
