Regular and intentional giving is a biblical principle that underscores the importance of consistent and purposeful contributions to the work of God, the support of the church, and the aid of those in need. This practice is deeply rooted in Scripture and reflects a heart aligned with God's purposes, demonstrating obedience, gratitude, and trust in His provision.

Old Testament Foundations

The concept of giving is established early in the Old Testament, where the Israelites were commanded to bring tithes and offerings to the Lord. The tithe, which means "a tenth," was a requirement under the Mosaic Law, as seen in Leviticus 27:30 : "Thus any tithe of the land, whether from the seed of the land or the fruit of the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD." This practice was not merely a ritual but a recognition of God's sovereignty and provision.

In addition to tithes, offerings were given voluntarily as acts of worship and gratitude. Proverbs 3:9-10 encourages believers to honor God with their wealth: "Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your harvest; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine."

New Testament Teachings

The New Testament continues the theme of giving, emphasizing the attitude and heart behind the act. Jesus taught about the importance of generosity and the dangers of materialism. In Matthew 6:19-21 , He instructs, "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

The Apostle Paul provides further guidance on giving in his letters to the early church. In 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 , he writes, "Consider this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver." This passage highlights the importance of intentionality and joy in giving, rather than obligation or reluctance.

Principles of Regular and Intentional Giving

1. Consistency: Regular giving reflects a disciplined approach to stewardship. In 1 Corinthians 16:2 , Paul advises the Corinthians, "On the first day of every week, each of you should set aside a portion of your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will be needed." This instruction underscores the importance of planning and consistency in giving.

2. Proportionality: Giving should be proportional to one's means. The principle of proportional giving is evident in the widow's offering in Mark 12:41-44 , where Jesus commends her for giving out of her poverty, saying, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others."

3. Generosity: Believers are called to be generous, reflecting God's generosity towards us. Acts 20:35 records Paul's words, "In everything, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus Himself: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"

4. Purposefulness: Intentional giving involves thoughtful consideration of where and how to give. It aligns with God's mission and the needs of the community, ensuring that resources are used effectively for His glory.

Impact of Regular and Intentional Giving

Regular and intentional giving has a profound impact on both the giver and the recipient. It fosters a spirit of generosity, breaks the hold of materialism, and strengthens the church's ability to fulfill its mission. Moreover, it serves as a testimony of faith and trust in God's provision, encouraging others to do likewise. Through giving, believers participate in God's work on earth, supporting ministries, aiding the needy, and advancing the Gospel.
