Rebekah, a prominent matriarch in the biblical narrative, is introduced in Genesis as the daughter of Bethuel and the sister of Laban. Her account unfolds primarily in Genesis 24-27, where her character is revealed through her actions and decisions.

Hospitality and Kindness

Rebekah's character is first highlighted through her hospitality and kindness. When Abraham's servant arrives in Nahor to find a wife for Isaac, he prays for a sign, asking that the chosen woman offer water to him and his camels. Rebekah fulfills this request with eagerness and generosity, as described in Genesis 24:18-20 : "Drink, my lord," she replied, and she quickly lowered her jar to her hands and gave him a drink. After she had given him a drink, she said, "I will draw water for your camels as well, until they have had enough to drink." This act of kindness and diligence not only demonstrates her servant-hearted nature but also fulfills the servant's prayer, marking her as God's chosen bride for Isaac.

Faith and Obedience

Rebekah's faith is evident in her willingness to leave her family and homeland to marry Isaac, a man she has never met. Her decision reflects a deep trust in God's plan and a readiness to obey His will. When her family asks if she will go with Abraham's servant, she responds decisively, "I will go" (Genesis 24:58). This willingness to step into the unknown underscores her faith and obedience.

Favoritism and Deception

Rebekah's character is complex, as seen in her later actions involving her sons, Esau and Jacob. She exhibits favoritism towards Jacob, which leads to a significant family conflict. In Genesis 27, Rebekah orchestrates a plan to deceive her husband, Isaac, into blessing Jacob instead of Esau. She instructs Jacob to disguise himself as Esau, saying, "Now, my son, listen to my voice and do exactly as I tell you" (Genesis 27:8). This act of deception, while ensuring the fulfillment of God's prophecy that "the older shall serve the younger" (Genesis 25:23), also brings strife and division within the family.

Protectiveness and Initiative

Rebekah's protectiveness over Jacob is evident when she learns of Esau's intention to kill his brother. She takes immediate action to safeguard Jacob, advising him to flee to her brother Laban in Haran. Her initiative in this situation highlights her resourcefulness and determination to protect her favored son, as seen in Genesis 27:43-44 : "Now, my son, obey my voice and flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran. Stay with him for a while, until your brother’s fury subsides."

Legacy and Influence

Rebekah's influence extends beyond her immediate family, as she plays a crucial role in the continuation of the Abrahamic covenant. Her actions, though sometimes controversial, are instrumental in the unfolding of God's plan for the Israelite nation. Her life reflects the complexities of human character, embodying both virtues and flaws, and serves as a testament to God's sovereignty in using imperfect people to fulfill His divine purposes.
