Peace

In the biblical context, peace is a multifaceted concept that encompasses spiritual, emotional, and social dimensions. The Hebrew word for peace, "shalom," signifies completeness, welfare, and harmony. It is not merely the absence of conflict but the presence of God's order and blessing.

The Bible frequently associates peace with God's presence and favor. In the Old Testament, peace is often linked to obedience to God's commandments. For instance, Leviticus 26:6 states, "I will give peace to the land, and you will lie down with no one to make you afraid. I will remove wild beasts from the land, and no sword will pass through your land." Here, peace is a divine gift contingent upon Israel's faithfulness.

The prophetic literature also envisions a future era of peace under the Messiah's reign. Isaiah 9:6 proclaims, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." This messianic peace is characterized by justice and righteousness.

In the New Testament, peace is closely associated with Jesus Christ. He is described as the source of true peace, as seen in John 14:27 : "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid." The peace offered by Christ transcends worldly understanding and is rooted in reconciliation with God.

The Apostle Paul frequently emphasizes peace as a fruit of the Spirit and a hallmark of Christian community. In Philippians 4:7 , he writes, "And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." This peace is both a personal experience and a communal reality, fostering unity and love among believers.

Wealth

Wealth in the Bible is a complex topic, often viewed as both a blessing and a potential spiritual hazard. The Scriptures acknowledge that material prosperity can be a sign of God's favor, yet they also warn against the dangers of greed and idolatry.

In the Old Testament, wealth is frequently seen as a blessing from God. Deuteronomy 8:18 reminds the Israelites, "But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers, as it is today." Wealth is thus portrayed as a means to fulfill God's covenantal promises.

However, the wisdom literature, particularly the Book of Proverbs, offers a balanced view. Proverbs 11:28 cautions, "He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf." This highlights the transient nature of wealth and the importance of righteousness over material gain.

In the New Testament, Jesus frequently addresses the spiritual perils of wealth. In Matthew 6:24 , He warns, "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." Here, wealth is depicted as a rival to God, capable of leading one away from true devotion.

The early Christian community exemplified a radical approach to wealth, characterized by generosity and communal sharing. Acts 4:34-35 describes, "There were no needy ones among them, because those who owned lands or houses would sell their property, bring the proceeds, and lay them at the apostles’ feet for distribution to anyone as he had need." This reflects a commitment to using wealth for the common good and the advancement of God's kingdom.

The Apostle Paul further instructs believers on the proper attitude toward wealth. In 1 Timothy 6:17-19 , he advises, "Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be conceited and not to put their hope in the uncertainty of wealth, but in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, and to be generous and ready to share." Wealth, therefore, is to be stewarded wisely, with an emphasis on generosity and trust in God.
