Mother

In the Bible, the role of the mother is highly esteemed and integral to the family structure. The Hebrew word for mother is "em," and in Greek, it is "mētēr." Mothers are often depicted as nurturing figures, responsible for the upbringing and spiritual guidance of their children.

One of the most prominent mothers in the Bible is Mary, the mother of Jesus. Her role is highlighted in the Gospels, where she is depicted as a woman of faith and obedience. In Luke 1:38, Mary responds to the angel Gabriel, saying, "I am the Lord’s servant. May it happen to me according to your word." This demonstrates her submission to God's will and her pivotal role in the divine plan of salvation.

The Old Testament also provides examples of influential mothers, such as Hannah, the mother of Samuel. Her account in 1 Samuel 1-2 illustrates the power of prayer and dedication to God. After years of barrenness, Hannah prays earnestly for a child and vows to dedicate him to the Lord. Her prayer is answered, and she fulfills her vow by bringing Samuel to the temple to serve God.

Proverbs 31:28-29 praises the virtuous woman, stating, "Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 'Many daughters have done nobly, but you surpass them all.'" This passage underscores the honor and respect accorded to a godly mother.

Sisters

The concept of sisters in the Bible extends beyond biological relationships to include spiritual kinship among believers. The Hebrew word for sister is "achot," and in Greek, it is "adelphē." Sisters are often depicted as companions and supporters within the family and community.

In the New Testament, Jesus expands the definition of family to include those who do the will of God. In Matthew 12:50, He states, "For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother." This redefinition emphasizes the spiritual bond among believers, transcending biological ties.

The account of Mary and Martha, sisters of Lazarus, in Luke 10:38-42, highlights the different ways sisters can serve and honor Jesus. While Martha is busy with preparations, Mary chooses to sit at Jesus' feet and listen to His teaching. Jesus commends Mary for choosing "the good part," illustrating the importance of prioritizing spiritual growth and devotion.

In the early church, women played significant roles as sisters in Christ. Phoebe, mentioned in Romans 16:1-2, is commended by Paul as a "servant of the church in Cenchreae" and is described as a sister in faith. Her example demonstrates the active participation of women in the ministry and support of the early Christian community.

The Bible presents mothers and sisters as vital members of both the biological and spiritual family, emphasizing their roles in nurturing, supporting, and advancing the faith.
