Topical Encyclopedia Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, was the eleventh king of the northern kingdom of Israel. He reigned in Samaria for seventeen years, from approximately 814 to 798 BC, following the death of his father, Jehu. His reign is recorded in 2 Kings 13:1-9.Historical Context Jehoahaz ascended to the throne during a tumultuous period in Israel's history. His father, Jehu, had been anointed by the prophet Elisha to eradicate the house of Ahab and to cleanse Israel of Baal worship (2 Kings 9-10). Despite Jehu's initial zeal for the LORD, he failed to turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, who had led Israel into idolatry with the golden calves at Bethel and Dan (2 Kings 10:29-31). Reign and Challenges Jehoahaz's reign was marked by continued spiritual decline and political instability. The biblical account in 2 Kings 13:2 states, "He did evil in the sight of the LORD and followed the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit, and he did not turn away from them." This persistent idolatry provoked the LORD's anger, resulting in divine judgment upon Israel. During Jehoahaz's reign, Israel faced significant military oppression from Hazael, king of Aram (Syria), and his son Ben-Hadad. The Arameans severely diminished Israel's military capabilities, leaving Jehoahaz with only a small remnant of his army. 2 Kings 13:7 describes the dire situation: "Nothing was left of the army of Jehoahaz except fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot soldiers, for the king of Aram had destroyed them and made them like the dust at threshing." Repentance and Divine Mercy Despite his waywardness, Jehoahaz sought the LORD's favor during his reign. 2 Kings 13:4 records, "Then Jehoahaz sought the favor of the LORD, and the LORD listened to him, for He saw the oppression of Israel, how the king of Aram oppressed them." In response to Jehoahaz's plea, the LORD provided a deliverer for Israel, allowing them to escape from the hand of the Arameans. This act of divine mercy, however, did not lead to a lasting spiritual reformation, as the people continued in their idolatrous practices. Legacy Jehoahaz's reign is a testament to the LORD's willingness to extend mercy even amidst judgment. His account highlights the persistent cycle of sin and repentance that characterized the northern kingdom of Israel. Jehoahaz was succeeded by his son, Jehoash (also known as Joash), who continued to rule in the ways of Jeroboam, perpetuating the spiritual decline of Israel. Jehoahaz's life and reign serve as a sobering reminder of the consequences of disobedience to God's commandments and the enduring patience and mercy of the LORD towards His people. His account is a call to faithfulness and repentance, urging believers to turn away from idolatry and seek the LORD wholeheartedly.
