The Noahic Covenant

The first explicit covenant mentioned in the Bible is the covenant with Noah. After the flood, God promises never to destroy the earth with water again, establishing the rainbow as a sign of this everlasting covenant. Genesis 9:11-13 states, "I establish My covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth. And God said, 'This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.'"

The Abrahamic Covenant

God's covenant with Abraham marks a significant development in His redemptive plan. This covenant includes promises of land, descendants, and blessing. Genesis 12:2-3 records God's promise: "I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you." The covenant is further confirmed in Genesis 15 and 17, where God promises Abraham numerous descendants and the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession.

The Mosaic Covenant

The Mosaic Covenant, given at Mount Sinai, establishes Israel as God's chosen people and provides the Law as a guide for holy living. Exodus 19:5-6 declares, "Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you will be My treasured possession out of all the nations—for the whole earth is Mine. And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation." This covenant is conditional, requiring Israel's obedience to God's commandments, and is symbolized by the giving of the Ten Commandments.

The Davidic Covenant

The covenant with David further unfolds God's plan by promising an eternal dynasty. In 2 Samuel 7:12-16 , God assures David, "When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his Father, and he will be My son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. But My loving devotion will never be removed from him as I removed it from Saul, whom I moved out of your way. Your house and kingdom will endure forever before Me, and your throne will be established forever."

The New Covenant

The New Covenant, prophesied in Jeremiah 31:31-34 and fulfilled in Jesus Christ, represents the culmination of God's covenantal promises. This covenant offers forgiveness of sins and a transformed heart through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Hebrews 8:10-12 quotes Jeremiah, saying, "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord. I will put My laws in their minds and inscribe them on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people. No longer will each one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their iniquities and will remember their sins no more."
