The concept of examination, both self-examination and the examination of others, is a recurring theme in the Bible. It is a process that involves careful scrutiny and evaluation, often with the aim of spiritual growth, moral integrity, and alignment with God's will.

Self-Examination

Self-examination is a critical aspect of the Christian life, encouraging believers to assess their spiritual condition and moral standing before God. The Apostle Paul emphasizes this in 2 Corinthians 13:5, where he instructs, "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Can’t you see for yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually fail the test?" . This verse underscores the importance of introspection and the need for believers to ensure their faith is genuine and active.

The process of self-examination is also linked to repentance and confession. In 1 Corinthians 11:28, Paul advises believers to examine themselves before partaking in the Lord's Supper: "Each one must examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup" . This examination is meant to prevent partaking in an unworthy manner, which could lead to spiritual consequences.

Examination by God

The Bible also speaks of God's examination of the human heart. In Jeremiah 17:10, the Lord declares, "I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind to reward a man according to his way, by what his deeds deserve" . This divine examination is thorough and just, reflecting God's omniscience and righteousness. It serves as a reminder that nothing is hidden from God and that He evaluates the intentions and actions of every individual.

Psalm 139:23-24 is a prayerful request for divine examination: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting" . This passage highlights the believer's desire for God to reveal any hidden sins or faults, leading to spiritual purification and guidance.

Examination of Others

While self-examination is crucial, the Bible also addresses the examination of others, particularly within the context of church leadership and community. In 1 Timothy 3:10, Paul advises that deacons "must also be tested first; then, if they are above reproach, let them serve as deacons" . This testing ensures that those in positions of authority are qualified and possess the necessary character and faithfulness.

The examination of others, however, must be conducted with humility and love, avoiding judgmental attitudes. Jesus warns against hypocritical judgment in Matthew 7:1-5, urging believers to first remove the "plank" from their own eye before addressing the "speck" in their brother's eye. This teaching emphasizes the need for self-awareness and grace when evaluating others.

Conclusion

The examination process, as presented in the Bible, is a multifaceted practice that involves self-reflection, divine scrutiny, and the careful evaluation of others. It is a vital component of the Christian journey, fostering spiritual growth, accountability, and alignment with God's will.
