Discernment

Discernment in the Bible refers to the ability to judge well, particularly in spiritual matters. It involves understanding and perceiving the difference between right and wrong, truth and falsehood, and God's will versus human desires. Discernment is a gift from God, often associated with the Holy Spirit's work in a believer's life.

In the Old Testament, discernment is frequently linked with wisdom. For example, Solomon, known for his wisdom, prayed for discernment to govern the people of Israel effectively. In 1 Kings 3:9 , Solomon asks, "Give Your servant, therefore, an understanding heart to judge Your people and to discern between good and evil. For who is able to govern this great people of Yours?"

The New Testament emphasizes discernment as a crucial aspect of Christian maturity. In Philippians 1:9-10 , Paul prays, "And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, in order to be pure and blameless for the day of Christ." Here, discernment is connected with love and knowledge, suggesting that it is not merely an intellectual exercise but a spiritual one that involves the heart.

Discernment is also vital in distinguishing true teachings from false ones. In 1 John 4:1 , believers are instructed, "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." This testing requires discernment, guided by the Holy Spirit and grounded in Scripture.

Wisdom

Wisdom in the Bible is more than just knowledge or intelligence; it is the practical application of God's truth to life. It involves living in a way that is pleasing to God and beneficial to others. Wisdom is often personified in the Scriptures, particularly in the book of Proverbs, where it is depicted as calling out to people to follow its path.

The fear of the Lord is foundational to wisdom. Proverbs 9:10 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." This reverence for God is the starting point for acquiring true wisdom, which is characterized by humility, righteousness, and a desire to follow God's commands.

James 1:5 offers encouragement to those seeking wisdom: "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him." This promise highlights that wisdom is a divine gift, available to those who earnestly seek it through prayer.

The wisdom from above is contrasted with earthly wisdom in James 3:17 : "But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere." This passage outlines the characteristics of godly wisdom, which leads to peace and righteousness.

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is the embodiment of God's wisdom. Colossians 2:3 declares, "In whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge." Believers are encouraged to seek wisdom through a relationship with Christ, who provides insight and understanding for living a life that honors God.
