Definition and Scope

Authority from Christ refers to the power and right granted by Jesus Christ to His followers to act on His behalf, to teach, to heal, and to lead within the framework of His teachings and mission. This authority is both spiritual and practical, encompassing the ability to proclaim the Gospel, perform miracles, and guide the Church.

Biblical Foundation

The concept of authority from Christ is deeply rooted in the New Testament. Jesus, during His earthly ministry, demonstrated authority over nature, sickness, sin, and even death. He then conferred a measure of this authority to His disciples.

1. Authority to Teach and Preach: In Matthew 28:18-20, often referred to as the Great Commission, Jesus declares, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you." Here, Christ's authority is the basis for the disciples' mission to teach and baptize.

2. Authority over Demons and Sickness: In Luke 9:1-2, Jesus "called the Twelve together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick." This passage illustrates the direct empowerment of the disciples to continue the work Jesus began.

3. Authority in the Church: In Matthew 16:18-19, Jesus tells Peter, "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." This indicates a special authority given to Peter, and by extension, to the Church, to govern spiritual matters.

The Nature of Christ's Authority

Christ's authority is characterized by servanthood and humility. In Mark 10:42-45, Jesus contrasts worldly authority with His own: "You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them. But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many."

Implications for Believers

Believers are called to exercise the authority given by Christ in a manner consistent with His teachings and example. This includes:

· Proclaiming the Gospel: Believers are entrusted with the message of salvation and are empowered to share it boldly and faithfully.
· Spiritual Warfare: Christians are equipped to stand against spiritual forces of evil, as seen in Ephesians 6:10-18, where Paul describes the armor of God.
· Leadership and Governance: Within the Church, leaders are to shepherd the flock with the authority given by Christ, always reflecting His love and humility.

Conclusion

The authority from Christ is a profound gift and responsibility, enabling believers to continue His work on earth. It is exercised in alignment with His will, characterized by love, service, and a commitment to the truth of the Gospel.
