1 IN the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, during the governorship of Pontius Pilate in Judaea, when Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanius tetrarch of Abilene, 2 During the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. 3 And he came throughout the country around Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins; 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, who said, The voice which calls in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make the paths of our God straight in the plain.
