1 And Joseph had been taken down to Egypt, and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guards, an Egyptian man, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites who had taken him down there. 2 And YHWH was with Joseph, and he was a successful man, and he was in the house of his lord the Egyptian. 3 And his lord saw that YHWH was with him, and all that he was doing, YHWH was making successful in his hand. 4 And Joseph found favor in his eyes and he served him. And he appointed him over his house, and all that he had to him, he put in his hand. 5 And it came to pass from the time he had appointed him over his house and over all that he had, that YHWH blessed the house of the Egyptian on account of Joseph. And the blessing of YHWH was on all that he had in the house and in the field. 6 And he left all that was unto him in the hand of Joseph and he did not know with him anything except for the bread that he was eating. And Joseph was handsome in form and handsome in appearance. 7 And it came to pass after these things that the wife of his lord lifted up her eyes to Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.” 8 And he refused, and said to the wife of his lord, “Behold, my lord has not known with me what is in the house, and all that he had he has put in my hand. 9 There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has not withheld from me anything except you, because you are his wife. And how can I do this great evil and sin against God?” 10 And it came to pass, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not listen to her, to lie beside her, to be with her. 11 And it came to pass on such a day that he went into the house to do his work, and not a man of the men of the house was there in the house. 12 And she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” And he left his garment in her hand, and he fled, and he went outside.
