1 THEN the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo prophesied to the Jews who were in Jerusalem and Judah in the name of the God of Israel, even concerning them.

2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shelathiel and Joshua the son of Jozadak and began to build the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets of God helping them.

3 At that very time came against them Tatnai, the governor on this side the River, and Ashtanbozan and their companions, and said thus to them and to the rest of the people: Who has commanded you to build this house and to erect this wall?

4 Then they spoke to them according to the law, saying, What are the names of the men who are doing this building?

5 But the eye of God was upon the exiles of Judah, and they did not cease till the matter went to Darius; and then they returned an answer concerning this matter.

6 The copy of the letter that Tatnai, the governor on this side of the River, and Ashtanbozan and his companions on this side of the River, sent to Darius the king;

7 They sent a letter to him wherein was written thus: To Darius the king, all peace.
