1 A Psalm of David. A skillful song, or a didactic or reflective poem. Blessed [fortunate, prosperous, favored by God] is he whose transgression is forgiven, And whose sin is covered. Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Of David. A maskil. Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.
2 Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute wickedness, And in whose spirit there is no deceit. Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit.
3 When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away Through my groaning all the day long. For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long.
4 For day and night Your hand [of displeasure] was heavy upon me; My energy (vitality, strength) was drained away as with the burning heat of summer. Selah. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah For day and night your hand was heavy on me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer.
5 I acknowledged my sin to You, And I did not hide my wickedness; I said, “I will confess [all] my transgressions to the LORD”; And You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah. I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.
6 Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to You [for forgiveness] in a time when You [are near and] may be found; Surely when the great waters [of trial and distressing times] overflow they will not reach [the spirit in] him. Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him. Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them.
7 You are my hiding place; You, LORD, protect me from trouble; You surround me with songs and shouts of deliverance. Selah. You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance.
8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you [who are willing to learn] with My eye upon you. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
9 Do not be like the horse or like the mule which have no understanding, Whose trappings include bridle and rein to hold them in check, Otherwise they will not come near to you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you. Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will not come to you.
10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked, But he who trusts in and relies on the LORD shall be surrounded with compassion and lovingkindness. Many are the sorrows of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the LORD. Many are the woes of the wicked, but the LORD’s unfailing love surrounds the one who trusts in him.
11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you righteous [who actively seek right standing with Him]; Shout for joy, all you upright in heart. Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart! Rejoice in the LORD and be glad, you righteous; sing, all you who are upright in heart!
