My son, do not forget my teaching, But let your heart keep my commandments; My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
For length of days and years of life [worth living] And tranquility and prosperity [the wholeness of life’s blessings] they will add to you. for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.
Do not let mercy and kindness and truth leave you [instead let these qualities define you]; Bind them [securely] around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart.
So find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight or understanding. Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way]. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the LORD [with reverent awe and obedience] and turn [entirely] away from evil. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.
It will be health to your body [your marrow, your nerves, your sinews, your muscles—all your inner parts] And refreshment (physical well-being) to your bones. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.
Honor the LORD with your wealth And with the first fruits of all your crops (income); Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
Then your barns will be abundantly filled And your vats will overflow with new wine. then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.
My son, do not reject or take lightly the discipline of the LORD [learn from your mistakes and the testing that comes from His correction through discipline]; Nor despise His rebuke, My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke,
For those whom the LORD loves He corrects, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights. for the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. because the LORD disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.
Happy [blessed, considered fortunate, to be admired] is the man who finds [skillful and godly] wisdom, And the man who gains understanding and insight [learning from God’s word and life’s experiences], Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding,
For wisdom’s profit is better than the profit of silver, And her gain is better than fine gold. for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.
She is more precious than rubies; And nothing you can wish for compares with her [in value]. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.
