My son, if thou wilt receive my words, And lay up my commandments with thee; My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
So that thou make thine ear attend unto wisdom, And thy heart incline to discernment; making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—
Yea, if thou call for understanding, And lift up thy voice for discernment; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
If thou seek her as silver, And search for her as for hid treasures; if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God.
For the LORD giveth wisdom, Out of His mouth cometh knowledge and discernment; For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He layeth up sound wisdom for the upright, He is a shield to them that walk in integrity; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
That He may guard the paths of justice, And preserve the way of His godly ones. guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones.
Then shalt thou understand righteousness and justice, And equity, yea, every good path. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path.
For wisdom shall enter into thy heart, And knowledge shall be pleasant unto thy soul; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
Discretion shall watch over thee, Discernment shall guard thee; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.
To deliver thee from the way of evil, From the men that speak froward things; delivering you from the way of evil, from men of perverted speech, Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse,
Who leave the paths of uprightness, To walk in the ways of darkness; who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, who have left the straight paths to walk in dark ways,
Who rejoice to do evil, And delight in the frowardness of evil; who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil, who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil,
Who are crooked in their ways, And perverse in their paths; men whose paths are crooked, and who are devious in their ways. whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.
To deliver thee from the strange woman, Even from the alien woman that maketh smooth her words; So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words, Wisdom will save you also from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words,
That forsaketh the lord of her youth, And forgetteth the covenant of her God. who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God; who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God.
For her house sinketh down unto death, And her paths unto the shades; for her house sinks down to death, and her paths to the departed; Surely her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits of the dead.
None that go unto her return, Neither do they attain unto the paths of life; none who go to her come back, nor do they regain the paths of life. None who go to her return or attain the paths of life.
That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, And keep the paths of the righteous. So you will walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous. Thus you will walk in the ways of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous.
For the upright shall dwell in the land, And the whole-hearted shall remain in it. For the upright will inhabit the land, and those with integrity will remain in it, For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it;
But the wicked shall be cut off from the land, And the faithless shall be plucked up out of it. but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous will be rooted out of it. but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be torn from it.
