1 My son, if you accept my words and hide my commandments within you, My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands.
2 if you incline your ear to wisdom and direct your heart to understanding, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding— Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding.
3 if you truly call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding, yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding.
4 if you seek it like silver and search it out like hidden treasure, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures.
5 then you will discern the fear of the LORD and discover the knowledge of God. then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. then you will understand the fear of the LORD and find the knowledge of God. Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God.
6 For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk with integrity, he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
8 to guard the paths of justice and protect the way of His saints. guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him.
9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice and equity—every good path. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path. Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will delight your soul. for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy.
11 Discretion will watch over you, and understanding will guard you, discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you, Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you. Wise choices will watch over you. Understanding will keep you safe.
12 to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perversity, delivering you from the way of evil, from men of perverted speech, To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things; Wisdom will save you from the ways of wicked men, from men whose words are perverse, Wisdom will save you from evil people, from those whose words are twisted.
13 from those who leave the straight paths to walk in the ways of darkness, who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; who have left the straight paths to walk in dark ways, These men turn from the right way to walk down dark paths.
14 from those who enjoy doing evil and rejoice in the twistedness of evil, who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil, Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked; who delight in doing wrong and rejoice in the perverseness of evil, They take pleasure in doing wrong, and they enjoy the twisted ways of evil.
15 whose paths are crooked and whose ways are devious. men whose paths are crooked, and who are devious in their ways. Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths: whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways. Their actions are crooked, and their ways are wrong.
16 It will rescue you from the forbidden woman, from the stranger with seductive words So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman, from the adulteress with her smooth words, To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; Wisdom will save you also from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words, Wisdom will save you from the immoral woman, from the seductive words of the promiscuous woman.
17 who abandons the partner of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God. who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God; Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. who has left the partner of her youth and ignored the covenant she made before God. She has abandoned her husband and ignores the covenant she made before God.
18 For her house sinks down to death, and her tracks to the departed spirits. for her house sinks down to death, and her paths to the departed; For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead. Surely her house leads down to death and her paths to the spirits of the dead. Entering her house leads to death; it is the road to the grave.
19 None who go to her return or negotiate the paths of life. none who go to her come back, nor do they regain the paths of life. None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life. None who go to her return or attain the paths of life. The man who visits her is doomed. He will never reach the paths of life.
20 So you will follow in the ways of the good, and keep to the paths of the righteous. So you will walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous. That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. Thus you will walk in the ways of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous. So follow the steps of the good, and stay on the paths of the righteous.
21 For the upright will inhabit the land, and the blameless will remain in it; For the upright will inhabit the land, and those with integrity will remain in it, For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. For the upright will live in the land, and the blameless will remain in it; For only the godly will live in the land, and those with integrity will remain in it.
22 but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be uprooted. but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the treacherous will be rooted out of it. But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it. but the wicked will be cut off from the land, and the unfaithful will be torn from it. But the wicked will be removed from the land, and the treacherous will be uprooted.
