34 It is like a man going on a journey who left his house, put each servant {doulois} in charge of his own task, and instructed the doorkeeper to keep watch. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
35 Therefore keep watch, because you⁺ do not know when the master {kyrios} of the house will return—whether in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or in the morning. Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.
36 Otherwise, he may arrive without notice and find you⁺ sleeping. lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.
37 And what I say to you⁺, I say to everyone: Keep watch! And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.” What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”
