“Be on guard and stay constantly alert [and pray]; for you do not know when the appointed time will come. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.
It is like a man away on a journey, who when he left home put his servants in charge, each with his particular task, and also ordered the doorkeeper to be continually alert. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
Therefore, be continually on the alert—for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.
[stay alert,] in case he should come suddenly and unexpectedly and find you asleep and unprepared. lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping.
What I say to you I say to everyone, ‘Be on the alert [stay awake and be continually cautious]!’” And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.” What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”
