1 One day in a place where Jesus had just finished praying, one of His disciples requested, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples. Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, when He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.” One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. 2 So Jesus told them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose one of you goes to his friend at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread, And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; And He said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread;
6 because a friend of mine has come to me on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him. for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? because a friend of mine has come to me from a journey and I have nothing to serve him’; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’
7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Do not bother me. My door is already shut, and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up to give you anything. and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you <i>anything.</i>’ And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’
8 I tell you, even though he will not get up to provide for him because of his friendship, yet because of the man’s persistence, he will get up and give him as much as he needs. I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. I tell you, even if he will not get up and give him <i>anything just</i> because he is his friend, yet because of his shamelessness he will get up and give him as much as he needs. I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.
9 So I tell you: Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you. And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.
10 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Now which one of you fathers will his son ask for a fish, and instead of a fish, he will give him a snake? “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead?
12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? Or he will even ask for an egg, <i>and his father</i> will give him a scorpion? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
13 So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him! If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall <i>your</i> heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? So if you, <i>despite</i> being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?” If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
14 One day Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. And when the demon was gone, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowds were amazed, Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. And He was casting out a mute demon; when the demon had gone out, the man who was <i>previously</i> unable to speak talked, and the crowds were amazed. Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.
15 but some of them said, “It is by Beelzebul, the prince of the demons, that He drives out demons. But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils. But some of them said, “He casts out the demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.” But some of them said, “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”
16 And others tested Him by demanding a sign from heaven. while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. And others, tempting <i>him</i>, sought of him a sign from heaven. Others, to test <i>Him,</i> were demanding of Him a sign from heaven. Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.
17 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste, and a house divided against a house will fall. 18 If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? After all, you say that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. And if Satan also has been divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you claim that I cast out the demons by Beelzebul. If Satan is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul.
19 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast <i>them</i> out? therefore shall they be your judges. Yet if by Beelzebul I cast out the demons, by whom do your sons cast <i>them</i> out? Therefore, they will be your judges. Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges.
20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. But if I cast out the demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. But if I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his house, his possessions are secure. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: When a strong <i>man,</i> fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are secure. “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe.
22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted, and then he divides up his plunder. but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil. But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. But when <i>someone</i> stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, <i>that man</i> takes away his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder. But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.
23 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. The one who is not with Me is against Me; and the one who does not gather with Me scatters. “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
24 When an unclean spirit comes out of a man, it passes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left. “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. “When the unclean spirit comes out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding <i>any,</i> it then says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’
25 On its return, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. And when he cometh, he findeth <i>it</i> swept and garnished. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and dwell there. And the final plight of that man is worse than the first. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.” Then goeth he, and taketh <i>to him</i> seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last <i>state</i> of that man is worse than the first. Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they come in and live there; and the last <i>condition</i> of that person becomes worse than the first.” Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. 27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and blessed are the breasts that nursed You! As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed <i>is</i> the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. While Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that carried You, and the breasts at which You nursed!” As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”
28 But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it. But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” But he said, Yea rather, blessed <i>are</i> they that hear the word of God, and keep it. But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and follow it.” He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
29 As the crowds were increasing, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It demands a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, “This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. Now as the crowds were increasing, He began to say, “This generation is a wicked generation; it demands a sign, and <i>so</i> no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.
30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so the Son of Man will be a sign to this generation. For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.
31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and now One greater than Solomon is here. 33 No one lights a lamp and puts it in a cellar or under a basket. The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when <i>thine eye</i> is evil, thy body also <i>is</i> full of darkness. 35 Be careful, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. So watch out that the light in you is not darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.
36 So if your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, you will be radiant, as though a lamp were shining on you. If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.” If thy whole body therefore <i>be</i> full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light. Therefore if your whole body is full of light, without any dark part, it will be wholly illuminated, as when the lamp illuminates you with its light.” Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
37 As Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee invited Him to dine with him; so He went in and reclined at the table. While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat. 38 But the Pharisee was surprised to see that Jesus did not first wash before the meal. The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. When the Pharisee saw <i>this,</i> he was surprised that <i>Jesus</i> had not first ceremonially washed before the meal. 39 “Now then, said the Lord, “you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness. But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish; but your inside is full of greed and wickedness. Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.
40 You fools! Did not the One who made the outside make the inside as well? You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? <i>Ye</i> fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also? You foolish ones, did He who made the outside not make the inside also? You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?
41 But give as alms the things that are within you, and you will see that everything is clean for you. But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you. But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. But give that which is within as a charitable gift, and then all things are clean for you. But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.
42 Woe to you Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint, rue, and every herb, but you disregard justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without neglecting the former. “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. “But woe to you Pharisees! For you pay tithes of mint, rue, and every <i>kind of</i> garden herb, and <i>yet</i> you ignore justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
43 Woe to you Pharisees! You love the chief seats in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces. Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the seat of honor in the synagogues and personal greetings in the marketplaces. “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.
44 Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over without even noticing. Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.” Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over <i>them</i> are not aware <i>of them</i>. Woe to you! For you are like unseen tombs, and the people who walk over <i>them</i> are unaware <i>of it.</i>” “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without knowing it.”
45 One of the experts in the law told Him, “Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us as well. One of the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also. One of the lawyers said to Him in reply, “Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us too.” One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”
46 “Woe to you as well, experts in the law! He replied. “ You weigh men down with heavy burdens, but you yourselves will not lift a finger to lighten their load. And he said, “Woe to you lawyers also! For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. And he said, Woe unto you also, <i>ye</i> lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. But He said, “Woe to you lawyers as well! For you load people with burdens that are hard to bear, while you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers. Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.
47 Woe to you! You build tombs for the prophets, but it was your fathers who killed them. Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and <i>it was</i> your fathers <i>who</i> killed them. “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them.
48 So you are witnesses consenting to the deeds of your fathers: They killed the prophets, and you build their tombs. So you are witnesses and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. So you are witnesses and you approve of the deeds of your fathers; because <i>it was</i> they <i>who</i> killed them, and you build <i>their</i> <i>tombs.</i> So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.
49 Because of this, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and others they will persecute. Therefore also the Wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and <i>some</i> of them they shall slay and persecute: For this reason also, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and <i>some</i> of them they will kill, and <i>some</i> they will persecute, Because of this, God in his wisdom said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’

53 As Jesus went on from there, the scribes and Pharisees began to oppose Him bitterly and to ply Him with questions about many things, As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge <i>him</i> vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things: When He left that place, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile and to interrogate Him about many <i>subjects,</i> When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions,
