1 Then Elihu continued: Then Elihu answered and said: Furthermore Elihu answered and said, Then Elihu continued and said, Then Elihu said:
2 “Hear my words, O wise men; give ear to me, O men of learning. “Hear my words, you wise men, and give ear to me, you who know; Hear my words, O ye wise <i>men</i>; and give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge. “Hear my words, you wise men, And listen to me, you who understand. “Hear my words, you wise men; listen to me, you men of learning.

5 For Job has declared, ‘I am righteous, yet God has deprived me of justice. For Job has said, ‘I am in the right, and God has taken away my right; For Job hath said, I am righteous: and God hath taken away my judgment. “For Job has said, ‘I am righteous, But God has taken away my right; “Job says, ‘I am innocent, but God denies me justice.
6 Would I lie about my case? My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’ in spite of my right I am counted a liar; my wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’ Should I lie against my right? my wound <i>is</i> incurable without transgression. Should I lie about my right? My wound is incurable, <i>though I am</i> without wrongdoing.’ Although I am right, I am considered a liar; although I am guiltless, his arrow inflicts an incurable wound.’
7 What man is like Job, who drinks up derision like water? What man is like Job, who drinks up scoffing like water, What man <i>is</i> like Job, <i>who</i> drinketh up scorning like water? “What man is like Job, Who drinks up derision like water, Is there anyone like Job, who drinks scorn like water?
8 He keeps company with evildoers and walks with wicked men. who travels in company with evildoers and walks with wicked men? Which goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, and walketh with wicked men. Who goes in company with the workers of injustice, And walks with wicked people? He keeps company with evildoers; he associates with the wicked.
9 For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should delight in God.’ For he has said, ‘It profits a man nothing that he should take delight in God.’ For he hath said, It profiteth a man nothing that he should delight himself with God. “For he has said, ‘It is of no use to a man When he becomes friends with God.’ For he says, ‘There is no profit in trying to please God.’
10 Therefore listen to me, O men of understanding. Far be it from God to do wrong, and from the Almighty to act unjustly. “Therefore, hear me, you men of understanding: far be it from God that he should do wickedness, and from the Almighty that he should do wrong. Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: far be it from God, <i>that he should do</i> wickedness; and <i>from</i> the Almighty, <i>that he should commit</i> iniquity. “Therefore, listen to me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God to do evil, And from the Almighty to do wrong. “So listen to me, you men of understanding. Far be it from God to do evil, from the Almighty to do wrong.
11 For according to a man’s deeds He repays him; according to a man’s ways He brings consequences. For according to the work of a man he will repay him, and according to his ways he will make it befall him. For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to <i>his</i> ways. “For He repays a person for his work, And lets <i>things</i> happen in correspondence to a man’s behavior. He repays everyone for what they have done; he brings on them what their conduct deserves.
12 Indeed, it is true that God does not act wickedly, and the Almighty does not pervert justice. Of a truth, God will not do wickedly, and the Almighty will not pervert justice. Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment. “God certainly will not act wickedly, And the Almighty will not pervert justice. It is unthinkable that God would do wrong, that the Almighty would pervert justice.
13 Who gave Him charge over the earth? Who appointed Him over the whole world? Who gave him charge over the earth, and who laid on him the whole world? Who hath given him a charge over the earth? or who hath disposed the whole world? “Who gave Him authority over the earth? And who has placed the whole world <i>on Him?</i> Who appointed him over the earth? Who put him in charge of the whole world?
14 If He were to set His heart to it and withdraw His Spirit and breath, If he should set his heart to it and gather to himself his spirit and his breath, If he set his heart upon man, <i>if</i> he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath; “If He were to determine to do so, If He were to gather His spirit and His breath to Himself, If it were his intention and he withdrew his spirit and breath,
15 all flesh would perish together and mankind would return to the dust. all flesh would perish together, and man would return to dust. All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust. 16 If you have understanding, hear this; listen to my words. “If you have understanding, hear this; listen to what I say. 17 Could one who hates justice govern? Will you condemn the just and mighty One, Shall one who hates justice govern? Will you condemn him who is righteous and mighty, Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just? “Shall one who hates justice rule? And will you condemn the righteous mighty One, Can someone who hates justice govern? Will you condemn the just and mighty One?
18 who says to kings, ‘You are worthless!’ and to nobles, ‘You are wicked,’ who says to a king, ‘Worthless one,’ and to nobles, ‘Wicked man,’ <i>Is it fit</i> to say to a king, <i>Thou art</i> wicked? <i>and</i> to princes, <i>Ye are</i> ungodly? Who says to a king, ‘You worthless one,’ To nobles, ‘You wicked one’; Is he not the One who says to kings, ‘You are worthless,’ and to nobles, ‘You are wicked,’
19 who is not partial to princes and does not favor rich over poor? For they are all the work of His hands. who shows no partiality to princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor, for they are all the work of his hands? <i>How much less to him</i> that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all <i>are</i> the work of his hands. Who shows no partiality to the prominent, Nor regards the rich as above the poor, Since they are all the work of His hands? who shows no partiality to princes and does not favor the rich over the poor, for they are all the work of his hands?
20 They die in an instant, in the middle of the night. The people convulse and pass away; the mighty are removed without human hand. In a moment they die; at midnight the people are shaken and pass away, and the mighty are taken away by no human hand. In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand. “In a moment they die, and at midnight People are shaken and pass away, And the powerful are taken away without a hand. They die in an instant, in the middle of the night; the people are shaken and they pass away; the mighty are removed without human hand.
21 For His eyes are on the ways of a man, and He sees his every step. “For his eyes are on the ways of a man, and he sees all his steps. For his eyes <i>are</i> upon the ways of man, and he seeth all his goings. “For His eyes are upon the ways of a person, And He sees all his steps. “His eyes are on the ways of mortals; he sees their every step.
22 There is no darkness or deep shadow where the workers of iniquity can hide. There is no gloom or deep darkness where evildoers may hide themselves. <i>There is</i> no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves. “There is no darkness or deep shadow Where the workers of injustice can hide themselves. There is no deep shadow, no utter darkness, where evildoers can hide.
23 For God need not examine a man further or have him approach for judgment. For God has no need to consider a man further, that he should go before God in judgment. For he will not lay upon man more <i>than right</i>; that he should enter into judgment with God. “For He does not <i>need to</i> consider a person further, That he should go before God in judgment. God has no need to examine people further, that they should come before him for judgment.
24 He shatters the mighty without inquiry and sets up others in their place. He shatters the mighty without investigation and sets others in their place. 27 because they turned aside from Him and had no regard for any of His ways. because they turned aside from following him and had no regard for any of his ways, Because they turned back from him, and would not consider any of his ways: Because they turned aside from following Him, And had no regard for any of His ways, because they turned from following him and had no regard for any of his ways.
28 They caused the cry of the poor to come before Him, and He heard the outcry of the afflicted. so that they caused the cry of the poor to come to him, and he heard the cry of the afflicted— So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto him, and he heareth the cry of the afflicted. 29 But when He remains silent, who can condemn Him? When He hides His face, who can see Him? Yet He watches over both man and nation, When he is quiet, who can condemn? When he hides his face, who can behold him, whether it be a nation or a man?— When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth <i>his</i> face, who then can behold him? whether <i>it be done</i> against a nation, or against a man only: When He keeps quiet, who can condemn? And when He hides His face, who then can look at Him, That is, regarding both nation and a person?— But if he remains silent, who can condemn him? If he hides his face, who can see him? Yet he is over individual and nation alike,
30 that godless men should not rule or lay snares for the people. that a godless man should not reign, that he should not ensnare the people. That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared. “So that godless people would not rule, Nor be snares for the people. to keep the godless from ruling, from laying snares for the people.
31 Suppose someone says to God, ‘I have endured my punishment; I will offend no more. “For has anyone said to God, ‘I have borne punishment; I will not offend any more; Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne <i>chastisement</i>, I will not offend <i>any more</i>: “For has anyone said to God, ‘I have endured <i>punishment;</i> I will not offend <i>anymore;</i> “Suppose someone says to God, ‘I am guilty but will offend no more.
32 Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do it again.’ teach me what I do not see; if I have done iniquity, I will do it no more’? <i>That which</i> I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more. Teach me what I do not see; If I have done wrong, I will not do it again’? Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.’
33 Should God repay you on your own terms when you have disavowed His? You must choose, not I; so tell me what you know. Will he then make repayment to suit you, because you reject it? For you must choose, and not I; therefore declare what you know. <i>Should it be</i> according to thy mind? he will recompense it, whether thou refuse, or whether thou choose; and not I: therefore speak what thou knowest. “Shall <i>God</i> repay on your terms, because you have rejected <i>His?</i> For you must choose, and not I; Therefore declare what you know. Should God then reward you on your terms, when you refuse to repent? You must decide, not I; so tell me what you know.
34 Men of understanding will declare to me, and the wise men who hear me will say: Men of understanding will say to me, and the wise man who hears me will say: Let men of understanding tell me, and let a wise man hearken unto me. “Men of understanding will say to me, And a wise man who hears me, “Men of understanding declare, wise men who hear me say to me,
35 ‘Job speaks without knowledge; his words lack insight.’ ‘Job speaks without knowledge; his words are without insight.’ Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words <i>were</i> without wisdom. ‘Job speaks without knowledge, And his words are without wisdom. Job speaks without knowledge; his words lack insight.’
36 If only Job were tried to the utmost for answering like a wicked man. Would that Job were tried to the end, because he answers like wicked men. My desire <i>is that</i> Job may be tried unto the end because of <i>his</i> answers for wicked men. ‘Oh that Job were tested to the limit, Because he answers like sinners. Oh, that Job might be tested to the utmost for answering like a wicked man!
