1 “Surely there is a mine for silver and a place where gold is refined. “Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place for gold that they refine. Mortals put an end to the darkness; they search out the farthest recesses for ore in the blackest darkness.
4 Far from human habitation he cuts a shaft in places forgotten by the foot of man. Far from men he dangles and sways. He opens shafts in a valley away from where anyone lives; they are forgotten by travelers; they hang in the air, far away from mankind; they swing to and fro. The flood breaketh out from the inhabitant; <i>even the waters</i> forgotten of the foot: they are dried up, they are gone away from men. “He sinks a shaft away from inhabited areas, Forgotten by the foot; They hang <i>and</i> swing, away from people. Far from human dwellings they cut a shaft, in places untouched by human feet; far from other people they dangle and sway.
5 Food may come from the earth, but from below it is transformed as by fire. As for the earth, out of it comes bread, but underneath it is turned up as by fire. <i>As for</i> the earth, out of it cometh bread: and under it is turned up as it were fire. “From the earth comes food, And underneath, it is turned over like fire. The earth, from which food comes, is transformed below as by fire;
6 Its rocks are the source of sapphires, containing flecks of gold. Its stones are the place of sapphires, and it has dust of gold. The stones of it <i>are</i> the place of sapphires: and it hath dust of gold. “Its rocks are the source of sapphires, And its dust <i>contains</i> gold. lapis lazuli comes from its rocks, and its dust contains nuggets of gold.
7 No bird of prey knows that path; no falcon’s eye has seen it. “That path no bird of prey knows, and the falcon’s eye has not seen it. <i>There is</i> a path which no fowl knoweth, and which the vulture's eye hath not seen: “No bird of prey knows the path, Nor has the falcon’s eye caught sight of it. No bird of prey knows that hidden path, no falcon’s eye has seen it.
8 Proud beasts have never trodden it; no lion has ever prowled over it. The proud beasts have not trodden it; the lion has not passed over it. The lion's whelps have not trodden it, nor the fierce lion passed by it. “The proud animals have not trodden it, Nor has the lion passed over it. Proud beasts do not set foot on it, and no lion prowls there.
9 The miner strikes the flint; he overturns mountains at their base. “Man puts his hand to the flinty rock and overturns mountains by the roots. He putteth forth his hand upon the rock; he overturneth the mountains by the roots. “He puts his hand on the flint; He overturns the mountains at the base. People assault the flinty rock with their hands and lay bare the roots of the mountains.
10 He hews out channels in the rocks, and his eyes spot every treasure. He cuts out channels in the rocks, and his eye sees every precious thing. He cutteth out rivers among the rocks; and his eye seeth every precious thing. “He carves out channels through the rocks, And his eye sees anything precious. They tunnel through the rock; their eyes see all its treasures.
11 He stops up the sources of the streams to bring what is hidden to light. He dams up the streams so that they do not trickle, and the thing that is hidden he brings out to light. He bindeth the floods from overflowing; and <i>the thing that is</i> hid bringeth he forth to light. “He dams up the streams from flowing, And brings to light what is hidden. They search the sources of the rivers and bring hidden things to light.
12 But where can wisdom be found, and where does understanding dwell? “But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? But where shall wisdom be found? and where <i>is</i> the place of understanding? “But where can wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding? But where can wisdom be found? Where does understanding dwell?
13 No man can know its value, nor is it found in the land of the living. Man does not know its worth, and it is not found in the land of the living. Man knoweth not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living. “Mankind does not know its value, Nor is it found in the land of the living. No mortal comprehends its worth; it cannot be found in the land of the living.
14 The ocean depths say, ‘It is not in me,’ while the sea declares, ‘It is not with me.’ The deep says, ‘It is not in me,’ and the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’ The depth saith, It <i>is</i> not in me: and the sea saith, <i>It is</i> not with me. “The ocean depth says, ‘It is not in me’; And the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’ The deep says, “It is not in me|; the sea says, “It is not with me.”
15 It cannot be bought with gold, nor can its price be weighed out in silver. It cannot be bought for gold, and silver cannot be weighed as its price. It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed <i>for</i> the price thereof. “Pure gold cannot be given in exchange for it, Nor can silver be weighed as its price. It cannot be bought with the finest gold, nor can its price be weighed out in silver.
16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or sapphire. It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, in precious onyx or sapphire. It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. “It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir, In precious onyx, or sapphire. 17 Neither gold nor crystal can compare to it, nor jewels of fine gold be exchanged for it. Gold and glass cannot equal it, nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold. The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it <i>shall not be for</i> jewels of fine gold. “Gold or glass cannot equal it, Nor can it be exchanged for articles of pure gold. Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it, nor can it be had for jewels of gold.
18 Coral and quartz are unworthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies. No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; the price of wisdom is above pearls. No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom <i>is</i> above rubies. “Coral and crystal are not to be mentioned; And the acquisition of wisdom is more <i>valuable</i> than pearls. Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention; the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.
19 Topaz from Cush cannot compare to it, nor can it be valued in pure gold. The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, nor can it be valued in pure gold. The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold. “The topaz of Cush cannot equal it, Nor can it be valued in pure gold. The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it; it cannot be bought with pure gold.
20 From where then does wisdom come, and where does understanding dwell? “From where, then, does wisdom come? And where is the place of understanding? Whence then cometh wisdom? and where <i>is</i> the place of understanding? “Where then does wisdom come from? And where is this place of understanding? Where then does wisdom come from? 21 It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing and concealed from the birds of the air. It is hidden from the eyes of all living and concealed from the birds of the air. Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air. “It is hidden from the eyes of every living <i>creature,</i> And concealed from the birds of the sky. 22 Abaddon and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor about it.’ Abaddon and Death say, ‘We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.’ Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame thereof with our ears. “Abaddon and Death say, ‘With our ears we have heard a report of it.’ Destruction and Death say, “Only a rumor of it has reached our ears.”
23 But God understands its way, and He knows its place. “God understands the way to it, and he knows its place. God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof. “God understands its way, And He knows its place. God understands the way to it and he alone knows where it dwells,

27 then He looked at wisdom and appraised it; He established it and searched it out. then he saw it and declared it; he established it, and searched it out.
