1 But Job answered and said, Then Job answered and said: Then Job replied:
2 “What a help you are to the weak (powerless)! How you have saved the arm that is without strength! “How you have helped him who has no power! How you have saved the arm that has no strength! “How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the arm that is feeble!
3 “How you have counseled the one who has no wisdom! And how abundantly you have provided sound wisdom and helpful insight! How you have counseled him who has no wisdom, and plentifully declared sound knowledge! What advice you have offered to one without wisdom! And what great insight you have displayed!
4 “To whom have you uttered [these] words? And whose spirit [inspired what] came forth from you? With whose help have you uttered words, and whose breath has come out from you? Who has helped you utter these words? And whose spirit spoke from your mouth?
5 “The spirits of the dead tremble Underneath the waters and their inhabitants. The dead tremble under the waters and their inhabitants. “The dead are in deep anguish, those beneath the waters and all that live in them.
6 “Sheol (the nether world, the place of the dead) is naked before God, And Abaddon (the place of destruction) has no covering [from His eyes]. Sheol is naked before God, and Abaddon has no covering. The realm of the dead is naked before God; Destruction lies uncovered.
7 “It is He who spreads out the north over emptiness And hangs the earth on nothing. He stretches out the north over the void and hangs the earth on nothing. He spreads out the northern skies over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing.
8 “He wraps the waters in His clouds [which otherwise would spill on earth all at once], And the cloud does not burst under them. He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not split open under them. He wraps up the waters in his clouds, yet the clouds do not burst under their weight.
9 “He covers the face of the full moon And spreads His cloud over it. He covers the face of the full moon and spreads over it his cloud. He covers the face of the full moon, spreading his clouds over it.
10 “He has inscribed a circular limit (the horizon) on the face of the waters At the boundary between light and darkness. He has inscribed a circle on the face of the waters at the boundary between light and darkness. He marks out the horizon on the face of the waters for a boundary between light and darkness.
11 “The pillars of the heavens tremble And are terrified at His rebuke. The pillars of heaven tremble and are astounded at his rebuke. The pillars of the heavens quake, aghast at his rebuke.
12 “He stirred up the sea by His power, And by His understanding He smashed [proud] Rahab. By his power he stilled the sea; by his understanding he shattered Rahab. By his power he churned up the sea; by his wisdom he cut Rahab to pieces.
13 “By His breath the heavens are cleared; His hand has pierced the [swiftly] fleeing serpent. By his wind the heavens were made fair; his hand pierced the fleeing serpent. By his breath the skies became fair; his hand pierced the gliding serpent.
14 “Yet these are just the fringes of His ways [mere samples of His power], The faintest whisper of His voice! Who can contemplate the thunder of His [full] mighty power?” Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand?” And these are but the outer fringe of his works; how faint the whisper we hear of him! Who then can understand the thunder of his power?”
